Azat
Armenia must improve business environment - World Bank rep March 5, 2002 4:16pm 03/05/2002 Text of report by Armenian news agency Mediamax Yerevan, 5 March: Despite Armenia's improved economic performance in 2001, the World Bank (WB) is concerned about the shortage of state budget means, which can seriously impede the country's further development. This was stated in Yerevan today by Judy O'Connor, director of the WB department for Eastern and Central Europe, after the signing of a protocol on a package of bilateral programmes between the World Bank and the government of Armenia for the financial year 2002. According to her, this year the Armenian party must pay special attention to improving its business environment and [implementing] the poverty reduction strategy. Judy O'Connor warned that if there was no progress in these spheres, the World bank might reconsider certain provisions of its cooperation with Armenia. Minister of Finance and Economics Vardan Khachatryan said that last year the Armenian government had fulfilled the package of cooperation with the WB by 87 per cent. One of the programmes left to be tackled is Yerevan's water-supply and the Armenian side is doing its best for its speediest implementation.
