TEEN KRISTINA AYANIAN OF BURLINGTON HEADS FOR NATIONALSTaunton Daily Gazette, MAAPril 7 2014 Kristina Ayanian, a 16-year-old junior at Burlington High School(BHS), will travel to Orlando, Fla., to represent Massachusetts at theninth annual Miss America's Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant. Rachel Wyatt ofSouth Carolina the reigning MAO Teen, will be crowning her successoron Saturday evening, August 17.Kristina will be one of 52 contestants and will join a remarkable mixof honor students, debate champions, singers, dancers, cheerleaders,thespians, athletes, musicians and writers to compete for this covetedtitle and $600,000 in scholarship assistance.The Miss America's Outstanding Teen (MAOTeen) competition, the"little sister" to Miss America, promotes scholastic achievement,creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement forAmerica's teens, the MAOTeen contestants will be judged on personalinterview, talent, evening wear, lifestyle & fitness in active wear,and on-stage question.Kristina, a junior at Burlington High School, is a first-generationAmerican. She is the daughter of Lousine and Serdak Ayanian. She willbe playing the piano for the talent portion of the MAOTeen competitionand is promoting "Food is Not a Privilege, It is a Right - FightingHunger" as a platform issue throughout her year of service as MissMassachusetts' Outstanding Teen 2013.Volunteerism has played a very important role in Kristina's life. Shehas volunteered for many different organizations and charities sinceearly childhood. She initiated the "Our Young Stars" program; visitedand brought financial help and English-language books to orphanagesin Armenia; and visited and distributed stuffed animals and books topediatric patients at Mass. General Hospital that could not go homefor the holidays on Christmas day.At Burlington High School she is a two-time recipient of thePresidential Outstanding Academic Excellence Award, a recipient ofthe Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Level Awards, a recipientof Citizenship Spanish and Sportsmanship Awards and a recipient ofthe Prelacy Award in Armenian Studies. She is a Principal's AdvisorsBoard member, Burlington High School tutor/mentor and is a certifiedalcohol education instructor for the Burlington Public Schools. Ashort story contest winner, her work is published in the Anthologyof Short Stories by Young Americans.She has had training in voice, acting, dance, and piano and hasreceived several awards and recognition in all of these genres. Shehas been in many community and professional theater productions, butplaying piano is her passion and she has been privileged to performat Carnegie Hall in New York City. At the national competition, shewill perform a classical piano selection.
