Guest
Having dealt with our youngsters for some time, now, I have been thinking to myself as how immature, uneducated on the national issues, and how unreal their images of Armenia and patriotism are. I think there are many examples only in this forum. Yet, I suspect those coming to the forum are perhaps some of the best youngsters of our nation. All this reiterates to me how miserably have we failed with our social and other educational institutions. And I think this is a very pregnant situation – pregnant with consequences of alienating the disillusioned youngsters, who have been brought up with values and ideas which were not oriented at the real life, and the real Armenian world, but at the world of dreams and aspirations. They were brought up this way, because those shaping their worldviews and the national consciousness never believed that there would ever exist a real, independent Armenia. So they shaped their upbringing sort of as protest, a mean of preservation. The conflict between the reality and the imaginary may result in overwhelming cynicism and nihilism, and rejection of our identity, overall. I have been trying to calculate how much time is required for educating and informing one youngster at a time. I feel it is impossible. I feel it is completely misunderstood by vast majority of our young people what our problems are, where we are headed, what our mission is, and how to accomplish it. I am not sure that all of the more mature and settled Armenians are quite clear about all these issues. What can be done...? (:

Using your discussions with Rich as an example, your attempts to channel and funnel youthful aggression and patriotism into modern-day thinking and solutions is the answer.Don't be discouraged.[This message has been edited by Pilafhead (edited October 19, 2000).]
