Guest
Funeral held for Maria Podpomogova Family and friends mourn Glendale High student killed in car crash. By JUDY SECKLER HOLLYWOOD -- The small Hollywood Forever Cemetery Chapel swelled Monday with about 150 family and friends as they bid farewell to Glendale High School student Maria Podpomogova, 16, killed in a car accident Sept. 10. The brief service conducted in Armenian began with an instrumental version of "Celebration of Life." Afterward, two clergymen, one dressed in a black and white flowing robe and the other in a cranberry colored robe with a velvet collar and gold cross embroidered on the back, took turns reading and singing. At the conclusion of the service, Maria's mother and stepfather, Vart Zarkarian and Hrach Khudatyan, lingered at the open casket followed by Maria's father and stepmother. Friends and family followed to pay their last respects. Off to the side, a wreath with a pink and white checkered heart-shaped center simply said, "To our beloved Maria, from Godparents." "Maria was bright and a nice person. She was everything," family friend Rita Harutunyan said. She said Maria had gone to the movies with friends, and they were taking a girlfriend home to Hollywood when the accident happened. Getting the call from the hospital was "unexpected" and "indescribable," Khudatyan said."She was a great child and had great potential." Friend Meline Mendakyan, 16, shared a math class with Maria this term. "She helped me with homework and everything," Meline said. "I will never forget her."
