KARABAGH’S NATURAL RESOURCES

Facts about the rich entrails Karabagh has was talked about already back in Soviet Union times, but Azeri authorities always hurdled the future investigation of its natural resources. The goal was clear- to get hold of Karabagh’s natural resources only after the native people are forced out of the territory. May be this program was realistic for Azerbaijan then, but the Karabagh movement of 1988 ruined their plans.

After the declaration of independence the investigation of Karabagh’s rich entrails was especially stressed. In February 1995 by the support of Karabagh government a decision was adopted at the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NASA) to open Karabaghi geology laboratory close to Geological Sciences Institute of Armenia. The laboratory moved to Karabagh recently.

Certain job has already been done in investigating and mapping the Karabagh ’s entrails. It is planned to prepare documents on their exploitation.

As investigations show Mardakert region is especially rich in natural resources, where there are a lot of metallic and non-metallic resources. Although Mardakert region is not investigated thoroughly, but some mines of zinc, lead, copper, gold, pyrites are already mapped. Non-ferrous metals’ mines were found near Drbon, Vardadzor, Kusapat, Vank, Ghalanchi villages and near Mrav mountain.

Investigations showed that there are resources of granite in Hadrut, Martuni and Askeran regions. Gold and spar is found near Nngi village, and as scientists said the latter is widely used in different spheres of science.

The investigations and proposals of the new laboratory interested Karabaghi authorities. By the commission of Karabaghi prime minister Anushavan Danielian a project of building a cement plant on the base of Shahbulag mine is elaborated. The documents on two other plants are also ready.

The investigation works are greatly supported by Geological Sciences Institute of NASA.
