MosJan
CAVANAUGH NEITHER CONFIRMED NOR REFUTED REPORTS THAT POSTPONEMENT OF NEXT ROUND OF TALKS WAS DUE TO ALIEV'S REFUSAL OF ACHIEVED AGREEMENTS01.06.2001 YEREVAN, June 1. /Mediamax/. American Co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group, Carey Cavanaugh neither confirmed nor refuted today the reports Mediamax has, according to which the next round of talks for Artsax conflict settlement was postponed due to Azerbaijani president's refusal of agreements, achieved at the meeting in Key West. Speaking today at the interactive news conference, organized by the U.S. Department of State for Armenian and Azerbaijani journalists, Carey Cavanaugh said that "upon their return to their homeland, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan were to discuss with their circles the proposals and projects which were considered in Key West, that's just what they did". In response to the question of Mediamax - won't the mediators' statements [that the societies of both countries are not ready for compromises] have a negative impact on the peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Carey Cavanaugh said, "I wouldn't characterize the situation that way". According to him, the mediators got the impression of peoples' unreadiness for compromises during their recent visit to the region and their meetings with people. Besides, the mediator said, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan have told the co-chairmen about this as well. Carey Cavanaugh said that one of the examples of society's unreadiness for compromises is "the real storm, which broke out in the parliament and mass media of Armenia after the Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian used the term "occupied territories". --0--
