Guest
You know, this topic has been on mind for a long time, especially with the events of Latino-Armenian fights in Glendale, stabbing of a Latino boy by Armenian Gang members etc. I have not wanted to open this can of worms, because I am sure many will paint the Armenians as innocent and Latinos as demons, and that is sure to anger me, as I have numerous Latino friends who would give the world to me. I have also mostly dated Latina women, being the notorious race traitor that I am! Well , here goes. I am sure there is plenty of guilt to go around on both sides. All I know is I went to High school in Montebello which , at the time, was predominantly Latino, with a sizable Armenian minority. We had no problems with the Latinos, and mixed freely with them. IN fact, Armenians and Mexicans both went to Mr. J's(this is in the old days of the late eighties, probably none of you know this club) and other clubs, dressed very similar, and hung out together. There was absolutely none of the ritual fights that occur at Hoover High Most of the Armenians at that time were Lipanahays or Suriahays, with a few from Greece and Bulgaria. Why is there so much of a problem now? I have my own theories, but I will just shut my mouth about it, and let you guys explain this new, awful trend. Guest
My theory (at times flawed, I admit): Latinos and Armenians have both grown in numbers in the last decade in the l.a. metropolitan area: last I read, Glendale is roughly 40% armo, 35% latino, 15% asian, the rest white, black, etc. And that's just one city in the area with a roughly equal armo latino split. Now, these families, both latino and armo, are mostly first generation immigrant. There are adjustment issues to think about with first gen. immigrants. Both groups have a tough time adjusting because of their respective very traditionalist cultures. Most of these traditionalists desperately want to hold on to their culture (both armos and latinos) as a way of maintaining their identity in the assimilation process. In the process they cross each other's paths and because both want to be seen as the dominant group among the traditionalists, conflict ensues. This is the broad sociological overview, and is not the sole cause of the conflict, I'm sure. so anyway, that's my take on it.. gayane
Guest
I think this is a difficult question. Gayane points to the sociological explanations, which I believe have a high degree of truth. However why the Armenian immigrants that escaped the genocide and made up significant parts of certain Boston suburbs for example did not behave in similar fashion ? I have seen a lot of bashing of hayastantsis on various Armenian forums, and I completely despise it. But it is beyond doubt that the Soviet influence in Armenian culture brought about some terrible side effects.
Guest
I disagree with the explanation that the Soviet influence is the source of the violence. I think these types of outcomes are characteristic to all gettos.
Guest
MJ, in many Armenian ghettos you never had the same degree of violence that you find in today´s mostly hayastantsi ones. The Soviet influence is from the deterioration of morals especially during Brezhnev and his satraps. I thought you had said that yourself in the Demirchyan discussion. Yes, ghettos potentialize this and other phenomenon. But there is no example that I am aware of, with Armenians, from wherever they came, except Armenia, that shows the same degree of unruliness and violence. It is our bad luck that they happen to be from Hayastan.
Guest
Boghos, you got me! You have a point. But note that the same degree of criminalism is also characteristic to Italian, Colombian, Vietnamese, black and other gettos...

Why do they do that? (I know, that sounds infantile) I think Hayastani's and Diasporas should be working together to help each other, and Armenia, instead of just mucking about like this because that is a sure recipe for going nowhere - and fast! I'm going to shift myself in the Hayastani and Diaspora thread now to talk about this. Anyone else who wants to - please join me!As for the Latinos and Armenians, I have no idea why these things are happenning or if they are still!
