MosJan
MINES ELIMINATED GRADUALLYAccording to the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), in the course of the Karabagh war the two conflicting sides planted more than 50,000 antitank and land mines. Right after the establishment of the truce in 1994 the defense ministry and several international organizations dealing with de-mining activity, detected and neutralized thousands of mines. In 1998 the Karabagh government created a special commission which is called to coordinate the relevant activities of local and international organizations in de-mining efforts. Some of these organizations are the Stepanakert-based British Hullo Trust brunch, the Karabagh representation of the Armenian Evangelical Association and Stepanakert office of Red Cross Society. In last year alone these organizations detected and eliminated 9,800 mines. The chairman of the commission Mels Hakobjanian says that the majority of mines are planted in the regions of Martuni, Mardakert and Shoushi. Recently the commission conducted a survey among the local residents, which revealed that the population is ready to support de-mining efforts. The people have offered many proposals, which can be applied in practice. This organizations ‘ activity proves that elimination of heavy memories of the war is still an important task. © Copyright AZG
