Switzerland Considers Assisting Artsax

STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan)—Nagorno Artsax President Arkady Ghoukassian met with Minister of Economy, Employment and Foreign Affairs of the Government of Geneva Karl Lambrecht on April 3. His visit has been organized by the Geneva Office of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU).

 

During the talk, President Ghoukassian told Lambrecht about the situation in the country's economic complex resultant from the war imposed on the people of Artsax by Azerbaijan. This circumstance, according to the president, creates serious problems for Nagorno Artsax's economic development. According to Ghoukassian, the priority task of the Artsax leadership is to restore the war-torn industrial infrastructure of the republic. Nagorno Artsax's being an unrecognized state largely impedes the successful implementation of the task. As a result, the republic is deprived of the opportunity to receive credits from international financial organizations.

 

The president's press service informed that the sides paid special attention to the issues of water supply to the populated areas of the Nagorno Artsax, in particular, the construction of water pipes and filtration stations in Stepanakert. In this connection, Lambrecht pointed out that the Swiss Government has had experience of rendering assistance in the realization of similar projects in the Ararat and Shirak regions of Armenia. In particular, he promised that upon his return he would study the possibility of rendering such assistance to Nagorno Artsax as well
