MosJan
France bids farewell to screen legend Alain Delon https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20240819-france-bids-farewell-to-screen-legend-alain-delon Paris (AFP) – As tributes for film legend Alain Delon poured in from around the globe following his death at 88, France was preparing on Monday its farewell to one of its greatest stars. No national tribute has been planned, as Delon had made it clear he did not want one. He said he wanted to be buried near his dogs on his property in Douchy in central France where he died. He had already started sounding out the local authorities there, Christophe Hurault, the sub-prefect of Loiret, told AFP. The prefecture "had given its agreement in principle". His three children, Anthony, Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, having squabbled bitterly for months over his medical treatment, spoke in a unified voice Sunday when they announced their father's death. Now they have to manage the funeral of the screen icon, deciding whether to limit it to close family or extend it to the cinema world. Yervant1
Asbarez.com Raging SoCal Fires Devastate and Displace Armenian Families and Impact Community Institutions by Contributor January 8, 2025 in Community, Featured Main, Latest, News, Top Stories The three fires currently raging in Southern California have impacted thousands of Armenian families who have been forced to evacuate from their homes and have impacted community institutions, with the Sahag Mesrob School in Pasadena baring the brunt of the devastation. Winds at times gusting up to 80 to 100 miles an hour swept through Southern California on Tuesday sparking fires first on Tuesday morning in the Pacific Palisades area. This fire has thus far burned almost 16,000 acres. A second fire erupted Tuesday evening in Altadena. The Eaton Fire, as the second one is called, which has burned through more than 10,600 acres, started in Altadena and quickly spread through surrounding areas, posing a threat to adjacent communities, including Pasadena and La Canada. A third fire, the Hurst Fire, which has consumed about 500 acres, began burning later on Tuesday night around Sylmar. The fires have forced mandatory evacuations for thousands of residents, with Armenian community members being impacted. Hundreds of community members living in Altadena, Pasadena, La Canada, Crescenta Valley and northern Glendale have been forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. Acting swiftly, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Western U.S. Central Committee announced on Tuesday night that Armenian community centers in Pasadena, Crescenta Valley, the San Fernando Valley, Montebello and Burbank have opened their doors to community members being forced to evacuate. Representatives of the Hovhannes and Hripsime Jivalagian Youth Center in Pasadena told Asbarez that, beginning Tuesday night, evacuated community members had sought refuge at the premises and were provided with food, water and beds. The center is also welcoming families with pets. Schools in the fire-affected areas have been closed, including the Tavlian Pre-School in Pasadena, which was not damaged as of press time. A school board member told Asbarez that the school will require a massive clean up, as soot, ash and other fire-related residue has covered the building. The St. Gregory A. & M. Hovsepian Armenian school also suspended classes, with no major structural damage reported. The Sahag Mesrob Armenian Christian School in Altadena, however, was burned down. The school, which has been in operation since 1980, sustained significant structural damage, with classrooms and buildings leveled to the ground. The Board of Regents of the Prelacy Armenian Schools has suspended classes in the Tavlian, Tufenkian and Pilavjian pre-schools, as well as the Chamlian, Mesrobian, Alex Pillbos, Cabayan and Ferrahian schools for the remainder of the week. The area around the Western Prelacy of the Armenian Apostolic Church is also under evacuation orders. Prelacy officials reported that the offices were closed on Tuesday, reassuring that Western Prelate Archbishop Kegham Kacherian was safe. The Prelacy also announced that its churches in Pasadena, Glendale, Montebello and Encino will be open and will welcome families who have been evacuated. https://asbarez.com/raging-socal-fires-devastate-and-displace-armenian-families-and-impact-community-institutions/?fbclid=IwY2xjawHsM6xleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHb5w8FgeynxHn6jWoJzCTq7_arMq2dGf2NUg86_W0R-2r7RheaQXijL5hA_aem_Kb_SEhRScimc9biESo7dzg

The Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School in Altadena has been completely destroyed in the California wildfires, the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs of Armenia Zareh Sinanyan has said. “This is horrifying… The Sahag-Mesrob Armenian Christian School has been burnt down. I am sorry for the losses of our compatriots in Los Angeles. I have no words for my friends who lost their homes in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena/Pasadena wildfires. Even the home where I stayed a month ago is gone,” said Sinanyan, a former member of Glendale, California. According to Asbarez, the three fires currently raging in Southern California have impacted thousands of Armenian families who have been forced to evacuate from their homes and have impacted community institutions. A fast-moving fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills on Wednesday night, threatening one of Los Angeles’ most iconic spots as firefighters battled to get under control three other major blazes that killed five people, put 130,000 people under evacuation orders and ravaged communities from the Pacific Coast to inland Pasadena. The Palisades fire was the most destructive in the Los Angeles history, with at least 1,000 structures burned, AP reported. According to the information available at this time, there are no Armenian citizens among the victims of the fires that broke out in the US state of California on January 7, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Ani Badalyan told Armenpress. “The Consulate General of the Republic of Armenia in Los Angeles is operating normally, and consular services are being provided. Yervant1
Your Central Valley, CA Jan 10 2025 ‘I couldn’t believe it’: Fresno local reacts to burned down Armenian school in Altadena by: Jason Takhtadjian FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Sahag-Mesrob Armenian school was leveled by the Eaton fire. The news made its way to the Central Valley, leaving alumni, and Fresno’s Armenian school in shock. “I can’t imagine living down in Pasadena, which we often do, and driving through Altadena and not seeing my school,” Ani Kitsinian, who attended Sahag-Mesrob Armenian School, said. Kitsinian and her family moved to Fresno four years ago. They’re saddened to learn their childhood school burned down. “My best friends in Southern California, they texted me. My heart fell. Like I was going to cry. I couldn’t believe it,” Kitsinian said. Kitsinian has fond memories of attending Sahag-Mesrob. “It was a family environment like I said, it was like, you know, my parents would drop me off and not think twice about it,” Kitsinian said. Kitsinian is now a board member for the Charlie Keyan Armenian school in Fresno, but before moving, her two daughters also attended Sahag-Mesrob. It was a time filled with a special memory for her family. “We had this very unique and special opportunity for them to be taught by the same teacher that I had,” Kitsinian said. “I remember my teachers and my friends and I loved playing there,” Kitsinian’s daughter said. The Charlie Keyan Armenian Community School also reacted to the devastating news. “The Armenian schools that have waitlists. Private schools in general have wait lists. It’s unfathomable to know where these students are going to go,” CKACS Board of Education Chairman Hoori Kalamkarian said. The loss of an Armenian school in Southern California was felt in Fresno. “I know that within our school community, we have families who have had to open their doors to their extended family, students that were coming in late yesterday and today because they were waiting for family to arrive from Southern California,” Kalamkarian said. Despite the immense loss, there is hope. An Armenian cross-stone, called a Khachkar, is all that is left standing at the school. It’s a symbol of Armenian culture, resilience and religion. “The fact that the Armenian khatchkar is still standing gives me hope, Right, to rebuild,” Kitsinian said.
