"We’re pleased to announce that FAR is supporting a new civic education initiative spearheaded by Sistema Armenia, a music education program founded by Boston-based pianist Anna Mikaelian Meschian and inspired by the famed model. The program is currently in active development phase and will open its doors in September 2013. Through innovative programming, Sistema Armenia will connect youth and musicians within Armenia to each other, as well as to musicians throughout the world. Students and teaching artists will participate in regular workshops, online mentorship opportunities, and peer-to-peer teaching, allowing them to receive and share valuable expertise. El Sistema originated in Venezuela 38 years ago. It is an after-school music education model, where ensemble music-making is the vehicle for creating stronger communities and more self-aware citizens. Nearly a million children have gone through the program, of whom the most famous is conductor Gustavo Dudamel, currently the Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and Musical America’s Musician of the Year 2013. Together with the top El Sistema Ensemble – the Simon Bolivar Orchestra of Venezuela, they have won the highest accolades from audiences around the globe. In a society where community involvement still appears to be perceived as a “backyard” concept, Sistema Armenia promises to provide fresh means of imbuing community values while equipping youth with 21st century skills and nurturing a strong cultural identity."
