"THEY FELL THAT YEAR"

THEY FELL THAT YEAR,

THEY VANISHED FROM THE EARTH

NEVER KNOWING THE CAUSE

OF WHAT LOSE THEY DEFENDED

THE WOMEN FELL AS WELL,

AND THE BABIES THEY TENDERED

LEFT TO DRY, LEFT TO CRY,

ALL CONDEMED BY THEIR BIRTH

THEY FELL LIKE RAIN,

ACROSS THE THIRSTY LAND

IN THEIR HEART THEY WERE SLAIN,

IN THEIR GOD STILL BELIEVING

ALL THEIR PITY AND PAIN,

IN THAT SEASON OF GREAVING

CALL IN VAIN, ALL IN VAIN,

JUST FOR ONE HAVE BEEN HANGED

...AND I'M OF THAT RACE

WHO DIED IN UNKNOWN PLACES

WHO PARISHED IN THEIR PRIDE

WHOS BLOOD IN RIVERS RUN

AND THEY GONE IN THAT FLIGHT

WITH CARRIAGE OF THEIR FACES

THEY WENT INTO THE NIGHT

THAT WAITS FOR EVERY MEN

THEY FELL LIKE TEARS

AND NEVER KNEW WHAT FOR

IN THAT SUMMER OF STRIVE

OF MASSACRE AND WAR

THE ONLY CRIME WAS LEFT

THE ONLY GILT TO US BEING

THE CHILDREN OF ARMENIA

NOTHING LESS, NOTHING MORE...

I don't know who posted this, but it was really not honest from his/her for having plagiated from Charles Aznavour poem.

I already posted here a translation I made from that poem(due to my poor English, I guess I messed up that poem, but still believe that French being a more beatifull language, its impossible to reproduce such poem), now be glad to compare it.

THEY FELLED

They felled, without really knowing why

Men, women, and children who wanted only to live

With heavy gestures like drunk men

Mutilated, massacred, their eyes open of fear.

They felled while calling upon their God

On the threshold of their church or a step of their door

Like herd of the desert, staggering, as a troop

Lay low by thirst, hunger, iron, fire.

No one raised his voice in an euphoric world

While a people was stagnating in his blood

Europe discovered jazz and its music

The complaints of the trumpets covered the cries of children.

They felled moderately, without sound,

By thousands, by millions, without the world moving for them,

Becoming one moment, tiny red flowers

Covered by a wind of sand and then forgotten.

They felled, their eyes full of sun,

As a bird in flight a ball crashes to pieces

To die wherever and without leaving traces,

Ignored, forgotten in their last sleep.

They felled while believing, ingenuous,

That their children could continue their childhood,

One day they would cross the grounds of hope

In open countries men with tended hands.

Me I am of these people which sleep without burial

Who chooses to die without abdicating his faith,

Who has never lowered his head from the insult,

Who survives despite everything and who does not complain.

They felled to be able to enter in the night

Eternal of times, at the end of their courage

Death struck them, without asking their age

Because they were faulty of being children of Armenia.

Translated from Charles Aznavour Poem "ILS SONT TOMBES" 1975

Faid, Movses

You have done an actuall translation of the song from French to English while Lilit has just typed up the song as Aznavour sings it in English. She has not made any mods to the song. Aznavour sings it like so in English.

I should mention that it is not a complete translation.
