After winning numerous competitions in the ex-Soviet Union, he moved to Italy where he attended the courses given by the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. He has regularly been invited to sing with the Bolshoi in Moscow, where he has sung both Italian and Russian operatic repertoire. In 1990, Grigorian began his international career with his debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Grigorian has sung with many of the world's major theaters including the Royal Opera House, Opera di Roma, La Scala and Covent Garden. Grigorian has made numerous recordings for Philips Classics with the Kirov Opera conducted by Valery Gergiev, including Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades and Iolanthe, Borodin's Prince Igor, Rimsky-Korsakov's Sadko, Prokofiev's War and Peace, and Verdi's La forza del destino.
