On the eve of his birthday a school in Yerevan Nor-Nork community was named after him. Demirchian headed the central committee of the Communist party in the course of 14 years, and was Chairman of the National Assembly of independent Armenia within the last months of his life. He became a victim of a terrorist act organized October 27, 1999, when five terrorists shot down 8 deputies and members of the country government in the parliament conference hall. Armenian Prime Minister Andranik Margarian is sure that the perpetrators of the terrorist act on October 27, 1999, as well as the organizers, will be punished. Talking to ARMINFO, he pointed out that today, on the day of the 70th anniversary of the birthday of the late speaker of the Armenian Parliament Karen Demirchian, the people remember the way passed by independent Armenia, which is connected with his name. His memory gives us strength in solving the country's problem, and although he tragically died, Armenia has the strength to continue the cause of Karen Demirchian and Vazgen Sargssian, who was also fell victim to the terrorists, Margarian said. The Armenian prime minister, Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Armen Khachatrian, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Gagik Harutiunian, the government and Parliament members laid wreathes at the grave of Karen Demirchian at the Pantheon. Head of the Ararat diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Navasard Kchoyan offered a service in commemoration of Karen Demirchian.
