When France officially recognized the Genocide, Turkish authorities called for an all out boycott against France in every arena of society, from military to material commodities. Turkey rejected all previously made agreements with France from Military to trade. A short time after, Turkey gradually called off its boycott of various French goods and services, and reinstated its normal relations with France, but it maintained its military boycott. News out of Ankara now implies that the military boycott has ended as well. Turkey recently gave $350 million to a French Research and Rescue exploration organization. MosJan Posted January 9, 2002 Author Report Share Posted January 9, 2002 Turkish-French Relations Gradually Improving YEREVAN (Armenpress)—According to a Turkish daily Radical, there is a clear improvement in French-Turkish relations, that were spoiled after France officially recognized the 1915 Armenian Genocide a year ago. The paper writes that preconditions for reviewing the relations, especially in the area of military cooperation, are being created. Last month, a senior official of the Turkish foreign ministry visited France and made a preliminary agreement, according to which several French companies will implement several programs involving Turkish naval forces. The Radical says that as a result of strained Franco-Turkish relations, several Turkish military programs suffered. The Turkish national security council decided last year to cancel several military deals with France, including orders for a military satellite and electronic equipment for F-16 fighters. The paper writes that when the Turkish Ambassador Syonmez Kioksal returned to Paris three months after he left, the relations between the two countries began improving. Let us remind that at the beginning of the previous year Ankara stopped realization of the contract, according to which "Thales" French company would have modernized the navigation system of eighty F-16 planes of the Turkish Air Force. The contract sum made 200 million U.S. dollars. The leadership of the Turkish Ministry of Defense acknowledged the partners it entirely refused the contract one of these days. Head of the defense department of Turkey Sabahatdin Chakmakoghlu stated in the course of the meeting with French Minister of Defense Alen Richard that adoption of the law on the Armenian genocide would always negatively tell on Turkish-French relations.
