Guest
European Parliament Debates Turkish Accession to EU STRASBOURG (Noyan Tapan)--During a session of the European Parliament on February 14, a debate took place on whether Turkey's candidacy as a prospective European Union member should be taken seriously. Elmar Brok, chairman of the foreign affairs committee said, "Turkish reaction toward the Armenian Genocide Resolution's adoption by France is proof of just how far Turkey is from the EU's criteria." Gunter Verhougen, responsible for EU enlargement stated, "Turkey seeks to join the EU, not the other way around. No one is denying strategic importance, however this does not mean the EU should change its internal statutes." He called on Turkey to stop covering up the truth with misleading language. Verhougen added, " the state of human rights in Turkey, the level of democracy, and the superiority of law still do not meet our expectations."
