Former Ambassador to Armenia and Georgia BaruchBen Neria stated today that "the Armenian Genocide is a very tragicand sensitive issue but at the same time Israel's sympathy is forrecognition of the Armenian Genocide". In his interview to Mediamax, he expressed his consent with theopinion of the current Israeli Ambassador Shmuel Meirom according towhich the issue already was brought to the political field. At the same time, he noted that serious debates on the topic are goingon in Israel. Baruch Ben Neria recalled that the issue of the Genociderecognition had repeatedly raised in the Knesset of the country. Touching upon Armenia-Israel relations, the retired diplomat notedthat those relations are very important for the both countries. "Israel is interested in developing relations with South Caucasusstates including Armenia. But it depends on Armenia not to the lessextent than us. Armenia decides on its own how to develop relationswith other states. As is known, tango requires two partners", saidformer Ambassador of Israel to Armenia and Georgia. According to him, the issue of the Armenian Genocide recognitionis discussed more and more actively in both public and politicalcircles of Israel, even in the Israeli Knesset. However, this issuealso has very many rivals, who think that it is necessary to put offthe discussion of this issue, Baruch Ben Neria said. He added thatthe issue of the Armenian Genocide recognition by Israel is alsocomplicated by the fact that this issue touches on the interests ofthe third country (Turkey). Though sometimes Israel has discrepancieswith Turkey, nevertheless, Baruch Ben Neria is sure that in the nearfuture these discrepancies will be settled, and this process hasalready started. "We develop relations with Azerbaijan because this moderate Muslimcountry is very important for us. The Islamic world is havinghard times. Secondly, Azerbaijan is a source of energy. Israel isisolated and has to buy oil from around the world. Therefore, theBaku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline is an important issue. Thirdly,we cooperate with Azerbaijan on the level of technology industry,"Baruch Ben-Neria said during the "Dynamics of Regional Security inthe South Caucasus" forum. He noted it is also very important for Israel to develop relationswith Armenia, but the two sides are needed. "Armenia, as I understand, has its own calculations. To note, the diplomat is currently in Armenia's capital city Yerevanwhere he is attending the annual international forum "Dynamics ofRegional Security in the South Caucasus," which kicked off Thursday. "The matter of Ramil Safarov is very unpleasant. What happened inHungary was a truly difficult and unpleasant situation. This wasfollowed by the reaction of numerous other countries," Ben-Neria said. Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that Ramil Safarov, a lieutenantin the Azerbaijani military, was extradited on August 31 from Hungary,where he was serving a life sentence-and with no expression ofeither regret or remorse-for the premeditated axe murder of Armenianlieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnershipfor Peace program in Budapest back in 2004. As expected, Ramil Safarov's return to Baku was welcomed, as was hisact of murder, by the officials of president Ilham Aliyev's governmentand much of Azerbaijani society, and the Azerbaijani presidentimmediately granted him a pardon and he was declared a national hero. And Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan announced on August 31 thatArmenia is suspending its diplomatic ties with Hungary. Also, Sargsyanhad instructed the Ministry of Justice to take all measures to applyto the international judicial tribunals, and with respect to theSafarov case.
