Chaldeans

Here it is.

I thought I would learn all about Chaldean culture, (there may be more and clearer sites), the one below confused me even more. For a long time I thought Chaldean and Assyrian were synonymous, it seems not. There was a sizeable presence of Syrianis in Aleppo whom we called (in Armenian) Assori(Ashuri) who,ironically enough spoke Arenian, even if with a Tigranakert or Urfa vernacular, while most Armenians(from Cilicia) spoke Turkish.

Dear Bassam, perhaps you can shed more light about the subject and draw more clear lines as the lines below are fuzzier than than Sip's brain..

Present day "Chaldeans" are those members of the Assyrian church who re-united with Rome a few centuries ago and decided to call themselves "Chaldean" to differentiate themselves from the Assyrians. Even the name "Assyrian" is a misnomer. These people are adherents of the "Church of the East" or Nestorians, who members originally came from numerous nationalities in the Near East, Persians, Armenians, even converted Jews. Neither the "Chaldeans" nor the "Assyrians" are necessarily direct descendants of the ancient Chaldeans nor Assyrians. In the case of the Chaldeans any connection is really far-fetched as present-day Chaldeans emanate from the area of present-day Northern Iraq and Southern Turkey, while Chaldea was where southern Iraq and Kuwait are today.

I knew Assori families when I lived in Greece (shlonak, shukran, taal I remember those words) one day we were seating with few of the Assyrian women, talking, they started convincing me that in the story of Ara Gegecik and Shamiram it was Ara who fell in love with Shamiram (Shamiram being very beautiful) and took her away then she killed him. I kept looking at the women seating next to me they had incredibly big structures; I said no Ara was beautiful, they said no Shamiram was beautiful.
