Ara Baliozian

Ara Baliozian belongs to the rare category of ethnic writers whose words are not easily understood by those that have not lived the realities that he so often analyzes, and even more often caustically attacks. In that sense Ara's writings have a necessarily narrow readership. His generalizations can only be properly understood in an Armenian context. That is not to say that human experiences are not similar. They are. But the Armenian case is full of its own particularities, being the most significant the Genocide and its aftermath. Of course the Ottoman influence in the Armenian ethos is also meaningful, as it determined in part the outcome of the Armenian tragedy.

 

His strength does not reside in his knowledge of history or economics. Nor is he devoid of some naivete found in the 60s defunct so called leftwing thought. He is a social psychologist that uses his profound knowledge of Armenians, in the broadest sense, to bring to the surface the undesirable.

 

Ara's major contribution is in touching the innermost of many Armenians. Provoking them. And at the same time agreeing with the silent majority of the dying Armenian diaspora.

 

One does not need to agree with Ara. Nor, I suspect, does he expect that. Ara is the chronicler of death, and as such he should be respected.
