ROUBEN SEVAK REMEMBERED

The 117-th birthday anniversary of famous Istanbul-Armenian writer, poet Rouben Sevak was celebrated at the Yerevan school #151 named after his name.

Representatives of Armenian Writers’ Union, intellectuals and men of art were present at the ceremony. They said the school after Rouben Sevak became a place where Western and Eastern Armenian languages are equally used and are integrated.

The students of the school performed a wonderful literary-theatric play – based on the works of the prominent writer. Also songs with the words of Rouben Sevak’s poems were performed by the chorus of the school. The director of the school Julietta Ghazarian made every effort to hold the event on a high literary level.

Philanthropist, scientist and publicist Hovhannes Chilinkarian (cousin of R. Sevak) contributed to preservation of Rouben Sevak’s spirit in the school. He also founded a museum dedicated to the writer in Nice and established a prize after his name. He opened Rouben Sevak museum in the school as well, and the guests of the ceremony had a chance to enjoy the pieces displayed there.

Famous Istanbul-Armenian poet Rouben Sevak was killed together with many other representatives of Armenian intelligentsia in April 1915 by Young Turks (during the Armenian Genocide).
