THREE ARMENIAN EXHIBITIONS HELD IN THE NETHERLANDS

In the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden jewelry, amulets and weapons tell the story of the pastoral tribes that lived at the foot of the Caucasus 3500 years ago, a Dutch daily Leidsch Dagnlad wrote in one of its latest issues.

Central in the exhibition is a cup with detailed scenarios from everyday life of this prehistoric, but in the least primitive people: hunting, the struggle and religion come alive in front of the viewer's eyes. Another top piece is a more than 3000-year-old wooden burial wagon, on which warriors in Armenia were buried with wonderful rituals and wealthy burial gifts. A film shows how archeologists excavated the wagon, which is to be seen outside of Armenia for the first time.

In the Utrechtese Catharijneconvent the visitor will be acquainted with the rich Christian tradition of this country in the east of Turkey. The making of books in medieval Armenia was considered a pious deed. It is therefore not surprising that in the State Library of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, some 15 thousand manuscripts are kept. A choice from these beautifully illustrated manuscripts is featured in Utrecht. Additionally attention is paid to the flourishing Armenian printing art in the Amsterdam of the Golden Age, where at the time a lively community of Armenian merchants resided. A photo-exhibit acquaints the visitor with the Armenia today.

Municipal Museum De Lakenhal in Leiden presents works of four contemporary artists. Although they are of different generations and were born in different countries, they all four have something essential in common: their Armenian heritage.

It is this Armenian identity that is central in the visual art of Sonia Balassanian (Iran, 1942, lives in New York), Krikor Momdjian (Lebanon 1947, lives in Woubrugge), Atom Egoyan (Egypt, 1960, lives in Toronto) and Linda Ganjian (Boston, 1970, lives in New York).
