abenlian
Recently I inquired the meaning of ambitious in Armenian and became surprised that there was no exact word matching the Latin one. If anyone in the forum could offer it to me, having better knowledge, it will be greatly appreciated. The reason for this inquiry underlies a hypothesis in the realm of Armenian social psychy.Thank you for your interest.
MJ
Hmm... Interesting question. We have used that word in Armenia in the form of "ambitia." Clearly, in that form, it was borrowed from the Russian. It carried some negative coloring in it, though the same word in English carries more of a positive human feature. And I can see where you are coming from hinting on the idiosyncrasies of the national psyche. Interesting subject. By the way, welcome to the forum. What do you trade? What's its volatility, today? abenlian
MJ, I think your explanation of the use of ambition in Armenia as adopted from the Russian language is significant. What is more that the word bears negative canotation in Russian, and therefore in Armenian. As you pointed out in the USA, the word is an appraisal rather than derogatory symbol. And you could certainly go deeper to explore the philosophical and psychological applications of this seamingly innocent inquiry. Interestingly, according to the Webster dictionary, ambition, in Latin ambitio, comes from ambire -- to go about. Ambire comes from the "practice of Roman candidates for office, who went about the city to solicit votes." By the way, I trade value for value. Thanks for the welcome. Harut
i guess we can't blame Armenians for not being ambitious. during Soviet Era the only people who were required to have ambition were scientists and artists.others just went to work, came home, and that's it.
