MosJan Posted June 11, 2002 Report Share Posted June 11, 2002 ARMENIAN MOVIE MAKES SUCCESSFUL STEPS Daily Azg informed earlier that a joint Armenian-American movie, which its directors say have won grand prizes in two of the three international film festivals in which it had been shown, had its first night in Yerevan on June 7. The movie called Herostrates (after a notorious Greek, who wanted to gain fame by burning down the temple of Artemis) was released by joint efforts of the Hayfilm studio and US-based Blue Lion Entertainment. Talking to daily Azg, actor Hovhannes Babakhanian, who played the role of Herostrates in the film, said the shootings of the film passed very successfully. Babakhanian, who is an actor of the Chamber Theatre of Yerevan, said that they shaped a totally new quality of Herostrates in the movie. The movie comes to prove that Herostrates does not burn down the temple of Artemis only for the sake of becoming famous, which is only an excuse. He said that in reality the idea of monotheism comes forward in the plot. The other actors and director of the film Ruben Kochar hoped that the film will have a long life, in which we are confident seeing the packed cinema hall of the Moscow movie theatre when the Herostrates is on. Nané Posted January 3, 2005 Report Share Posted January 3, 2005 (edited) I remember the premier in Glendale … so many people walked out in the middle of the showing. Even I, being very tolerant of movies (even if they are bad), barely stayed for the whole thing. This was one of the worst movies made by an Armenian. I just can’t understand what made Kochar believe that he could direct. Does he not know that a shoemaker should not bake bread and a baker should not make shoes? Hovhannes Babakhanian saved the movie (if it can be called that) with his brilliant performance. I have been amazed with every single one of his performances, on screen and on stage. He burned down the temple of Artemis in Ephesus in 356 BC in order to make his name immortal. He already achieved his aim. I thought *********** was the director. Actually I do know the background and I have seen the play as well (which was much much better). Herostratus IS immortal ...
