MORE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS….

*******************************************

"Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are."

What nonsense! Both Gandhi and Hitler were vegetarians.

"Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are."

That’s better, but not quite. Othello had Iago as a friend; and our own Raffi has said: "Treason and betrayal are in our blood."

Even more to the point: "Friends, there are no friends!" (Nietzsche).

Tell me some of your favorite things and I will tell you who you are.

I find that to be a far more reliable index.

My favorite Armenian sayings:

Hagop Baronian: "Truth is a language that if not spoken is forgotten."

Gostan Zarian: "Our political parties have been of no political use to us;

their greatest enemy is free speech."

Hagop Garabents: "Once upon a time we shed our blood for freedom;

we are now afraid of free speech."

My favorite Turkish proverbs:

"When the house is finished, death enters."

"Among ten men, nine are sure to be women."

My favorite films:

THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS (Orson Welles),

THE ROARING TWENTIES (Raoul Walsh),

SHADOW OF A DOUBT (Alfred Hitch****).

My favorite actors:

Cagney, Olivier, Brando.

My favorite actresses:

All of them.

The correct translation of the proverb is more like "a house is only finished being built when its owner dies" ...a rather different meaning from the one Hmayk seems to think.
