THE WOUND

Countries and their problems come in all sizes and shapes: there are big countries with small problems, small countries with big problems; there are quasi-anonymous countries that don’t make headlines but lead a contented, well-adjusted incognito existence; there are countries that suffer from an occasional attack of flu and others that are in the grip of terminal cancer….And then there is Armenia.

Armenia is not a country but a wound. When Khachatur Abovian (1805-1848) wrote his WOUND OF ARMENIA, he had seen nothing yet. Had he lived a century later, my guess is, he would have titled his novel A WOUND CALLED ARMENIA and instead of committing suicide at the age of 43, he would have hanged himself in his mother’s womb.

And then there are Armenians who think we never had it so good, we are in good hands, and it’s the rest of the world – beginning with America and Israel – that are in deep trouble. Figure that one out if you can.
