MODERNIZING YEREVAN

Yesterday a sculpture representing a fat cat, a work of notable Colombian sculptor, painter Fernando Botero was put up at the Tamanian square of Yerevan, and the escalators of the Cascade construction (a big stairway connecting the center of Yerevan with the Zeytun district’s ‘Victory’ park) started to operate.

This delighting for the Armenian capital’s residents initiative was put to life thanks to the Gafesjian Museum Fund, the sponsor of which is the notable American-Armenian businessman Gerald Gafesjian.

Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian, Yerevan mayor Robert Nazarian, men of art and Yerevan residents attended the ceremony. The mayor of Yerevan informed that the program represented by the Gafesjian Museum Fund (which includes the construction of the Gafesjian modern art museum building in Yerevan), and which supposes 20 million USD investments, was thoroughly considered at the mayor’s office before adoption. The thing is that the program was a novelty for Yerevan, but the modern approach that the initiative presents to art was positively assessed by the city’s architects and experts. Also the opening of the monument and the launch of escalators’ work is the initial stage of the fund’s activity, for it plans to build modern art museum in the capital, which will pass an air of the 21-st century to the conservative city’s atmosphere.

‘I highly assess this initiative. This is the beginning of a great job, and I hope that the construction of the modern art museum will give a new momentum to the cultural life of our capital’,- said Armenian foreign minister Vartan Oskanian.
