Synopsis-Place: Mytilene.Time: c. 259 A.D.

Act 1: The Baptism

Scene 1: The Entrance to a Hidden Sanctuary

Armenia has been conquered by the Romans, and they have decreed that Christianity, which has a significant following in the country, must be destroyed and its followers put to death. Poliuto, the principal magistrate of Mytilene, has come to a secret gathering of worshippers to be baptised into the new faith. He confides to his friend Nearco, who is a fellow convert, that he has misgivings regarding his wife’s loyalty to him. She was in love with a Roman general named Severo and only married Poliuto after pressure from her father, Felice, who told her that Severo had been killed in battle.

Poliuto enters the Sanctuary, and immediately his wife, Paolina, appears. She has followed him, suspecting that he has become a Christian convert. She waits for him to reappear from the baptism and, overhearing the service, finds herself strangely moved by its sincerity and power as the Christians pray for their persecutors. Nearco arrives with the news that not only is Severo still alive but that he intends to root out and destroy every Christian in the land. Paolina experiences both great joy and utter despair on learning that her lover has survived, but acknowledging that now they can never be united.

Scene 2: The Great Square of Mytilene

A jubilant crowd hails the arrival of Severo. He is overjoyed to see Paolina again, but his feelings quickly turn to rage and bitterness when he learns of her marriage to Poliuto.

ՄԱԼԱԹԻԱ, Մելիտե. քաղաք Փոքր Հայքում՝ Խարբերդից հարավ-արևմուտք՝ Եփրատի հետ Մելաս վտակի գետախառնուրդից մոտ 15կմ հարավ՝ երեք կողմից լեռներով շրջափակ հարթավայրում:

Հիշատակվում է դեռևս խեթական (Մելիտա), ասորական (Մելիդ, Միլիդա, Մելիդի և այլն), ուրարտական (Մելիտեիա) արձանագրություններում, անտիկ հեղինակներ Ստրաբոնի, Տակիտոսի երկերում (Մելիտինե): Աշխարհագրական հարմար դիրք ունեցող Մալաթիան գտնվել է Արքայական ճանապարհի վրա (հետագայում ևս այստեղով անցել են կարավանային ուղիներ):

IVդ. վերջին, երբ բյուզանդական Թեոդոսիանոս կայսրի օրոք Փոքր Հայքը մասնատվել է, Մալաթիան դարձել է Երկրորդ Հայք, Հուստինիանոս կայսրի (527-565թթ.) վարչական բարեփոխումներից հետո` բյուզանդական Երրորդ Հայք պրովինցիայի կենտրոնը:

Մանազկերտի ճակատամարտից (1071թ.) հետո Մալաթիան զավթել են սելջուկյան թուրքերը:

Մինչև XII-XIII դդ. Մալաթիայում գերակշռել են հայերը, այնուհետև` հույները, իսկ հետագայում Մալաթիայում հաստատվել են նաև թուրքերը: Սեբաստիայի նահանգի մասնատումից հետո, Մալաթիան դարձել է Մալաթիա նահանգի կենտրոնը:

1841թ. Մալաթիայում տեղավորվել են թուրքական զորամասեր, և բնակիչները քաղաքից մոտ 8 կմ հարավ-արևմուտքում հիմնել են նոր Մալաթիա, որը եղել է գավառի կենտրոն, իսկ 1870-ական թթ. մտել է Խարբերդի նահանգի մեջ:

1895թ. հայկական կոտորածների ժամանակ Մալաթիայի հայ բնակիչները դիմել են ինքնապաշտպանության, սակայն թուրքական գերակշիռ զորքը կոտորել է մոտ 7500 հայ, մեծ մասամբ` ծերեր, կանայք և երեխաներ:

1915թ. Մալաթիայի 40 հազար բնակիչներից հայեր էին 20 հազարը: Զբաղվում էին արհեստներով (հատկապես մանածագործությամբ, ջուլհակությամբ), առևտրով, շերամապահությամբ, երկրագործությամբ: Ունեին երեք եկեղեցի և նույնքան վարժարան: Քաղաքից դուրս՝ այգիների մեջ, գտնվում էր Մալաթիայի եպիսկոպոսանիստ Ս.Լուսավորիչ վանքը:

Մալաթիայի հայերը զանգվածաբար կոտորվել են 1915թ Մեծ եղեռնի ժամանակ: Ողջ մնացածները բռնությամբ տեղահանվել են և քշվել սիրիական անապատներ: Փրկվածներն ապաստանել են տարբեր երկրներում: Այժմ (1990թ.) Մալաթիայում կան փոքրաթիվ հայ համայնք (շուրջ 30 ընտանիք) և չգործող կանգուն եկեղեցիներ:
