EZ
http://www.worldjuniorchessgoa.com/images/aronian_champ.gif World Junior Chess Championship 2002 - Goa08th to 21st Dec 2002 Zhao & Aronian triumph, Silver for Humpy & Bronze for Ganguly Defending Champion Koneru Humpy had to settle for the silver, behind WGM Zhao Xue of China after the 13th and final round at Hotel Cidade de Goa, here today. The tie-breaks proved superior for the Chinese girl, as both Zhao and Humpy finished with 10.5 points each. Nadezhda Kosintseva of Russia took the bronze with 10.0 points winning her final round game. Overnight leader Grandmaster Levon Aronian of Armenia clinched the Gold in the Boys section, logging 10.0 points, half a point ahead of English Grandmaster Luke McShane. Aronian handed a crushing blow to Grandmaster Dimitri Jakovenko of Russia, taking the title by a clear margin. Grandmaster Luke McShane of England took the silver, while India's Grandmaster Elect Surya Sekhar Ganguly settled for bronze with a fine win over Polish Grandmaster Kamil Miton. Two medals - Koneru Humpy and Surya Sekhar Ganguly - and multiple Norms from talented juniors viz., Poobesh Anand, Dronavalli Harika and P Priya sums up the Indian showcase for this world event. Agencies add from Goa Grandmaster Levon Aronian of Armenia won the 41st World Juniors Chess Championship with a brilliant victory against GM Dimitry Jakovenko of Russia in the 13th and final round here today. The hosts had also something to cheer about as Grandmaster-in-waiting Surya Shekhar Ganguly, scored a quick-fire victory against Miton Kamil of Poland and finished a creditable third. He tied for the third place with Artyom Timofeev of Russia. The silver medal went to GM Luke McShane of England who scored a win against GM Ferenc Berkes of Hungary in a game of fluctuating fortunes. Ganguly's medal winning performance in the World Juniors comes after a huge gap of 15 years for India after Viswanathan Anand won the gold at Baguio City, Philippines in 1987. Aronian (10.0) was a man with a mission in the final round as he outplayed Russian Jakovenko for his third successive victory in the last three rounds of the championship. Aronian, whose onslaught started in the 11th round when he defeated S Poobesh Anand, continued his amazing form with a surprisingly easy victory over GM Pentyala Harikrishna and capped it with an excellent victory over Jakovenko in the last game. "Luck played a major role, you have to be lucky when you are doing well, form cannot be the only decisive factor," the Champion said referring to a few hiccups in the earlier rounds when he survived some difficult positions. http://www.worldjuniorchessgoa.com [ December 23, 2002, 08:23 AM: Message edited by: EZ ]

Merry Christmas to you also, to you all actually. By the way, you all have reason to be proud of your Levon Aronian. I hope you don't mind that I got excited too. I hope he will keep at it and become World 'adult' chess champ one day. Mosjan, I didn't know Levon spent some time in Holland. I assume he was here for a tournament? EZ
Actually, Mosjan, aren't mistaken about Aronian's stay in Holland? I'm pretty sure he stayed in Germany, which is right next door.

EZ
quote:Originally posted by MosJan:dor this way door that way Holand Germanya From over there geographically it looks like about the same spot. For us, from here it's only half an hours drive, but a world of difference. "Dutch" is not to be confused with "Duits". (duits=german; dutch=nederlands). My grandfather was a barber. During the war when the German colonnes would pass his barber shop and soldiers would stop for a shave, they had to keep an eye on my granddad's shaving blade. Once, my grandma had to come into the shop to help pulling him off one. To confuse him with a German would have insulted him deeply, although I kind of did as a child - because he wore a certain type of moustache I thought he resembled Hitler. I never dared to tell him that though. Now I've come to think of that, I have to ask my mom why he never changed his moustache. Maybe he thought: "I got it first"

But still, being so anti-german at the time, he must have thought he looked terribly handsome with that moustache, to still want to keep it To me it's the one and only moustache model that looks ugly on no matter who is wearing it. When I was too young to know all that hitler stuff I already thought my granddad looked strange, i mean, it's not really a moustache, is it, it looks as if it fell right off a chess board
EZ
talking about moustaches, I saw huges ones on old pictures of Armenians, really beautiful. Imagine something simular in firy red. Thats what my other granddad had, they even called him "Joost de snor", "Joost the moustache". Rubo
Once I experimented with mustache but it made me look like a terrorist and then I grew a beard then it made me look like a fanatical Iranian so no facial hairs for me unless I want the FBI to follow me. ”OK Mohammed tell us what you think” excuse me sir but, but I am an Armenian. “Armenian Iranian what’s the difference”Yeah thanks to that Bush brotherhood now we are a suspect group.
