Akhtamar's Holy Cross Church hosts 2nd liturgy

 

September 12, 2011 - 16:24 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - On September 11, the Holy Cross Church on Akhtamar Island in Turkey hosted the 2nd liturgy to mark the day of the Exaltation of the Cross.

 

3000 believers attended the 2-hour mass, served by the Patriarchal Vicar of Constantinople, Archbishop Aram Ateshyan.

 

On September 19, 2001 the Holy Cross Church hosted the first liturgy in 95 years. Contrary to prior promises, Turkish authorities failed to set a cross on the dome of the church, which, however, was installed two weeks following the mass.

 

Approx 7000 Armenian believers arrived at the 1st liturgy.

3,000 ARMENIANS ATTEND HOLY MASS ON AKHTAMAR ISLAND

  Thousands of Armenians from Turkey but also from the Diaspora gathered for a mass in a 10th century church in the eastern part of the country, Al Arabiya reported.It was the second mass held in the Church of the Holy Cross on Akhtamar Island on lake Van since it was renovated in 2005-2007 and turned into a museum. A first mass was held there last year.
   
  According to Turkish television reports, boat shuttles ferried the pilgrims, most of them from Turkey but some from Armenia and Europe, to Akhtamar. A new lakeside pier was built this year to accommodate the faithful, local authorities said.
   
  Nearly 30,000 tourists flocked to the church, which hosts one religious service annually, last year, the Turkish tourism ministry was quoted as saying. Monsignor Aram Atessian, who the interim head of the Armenian patriarchate who chaired the ceremony this year, told the Anatolia news agency that around 3,000 people arrived on the island, and only 6O percent of them were able to enter the church. The others heard the mass outside through loudspeakers.

Ըստ թուրքական «Հյուրրիյեթ» թերթի, պատարագը սկսվել է զանգերի ղողանջով, որը հնչել է հոգևորականներից մեկի բջջային հեռախոսից: Եկեղեցական արարողությանը մասնակցել է մոտ 2000 մարդ: Այս թիվը նախորդ տարվանից անհամեմատ քիչ է:
