Will reacent Immigrants return? Probably not. But let me challenge your intelect with a friendly banter. Perhaps it is better that they don't.

After all, what use is going back with no money, to a nonexistant economy.

If the Armenian authorities want to populate the land, they need to study history and emulate what works. Israel and the American West. In the first case, the Zionists offerred real financial incentives for poor Jews in various parts of Europe to settle in Palestine. they did not recruit middle eastern Jews or African Jews, but european Jews because they were more educated, more ambitious and more spirited.

as to the American West, the US government offerred free land to settlers who overwhelmed the native Indians and populated a continent within a generation. If the Armenian Government wanted to populate parts of Karabagh and Armenia, all they have to do is offer incentives to Armenians in Russia, and other parts of the former Soviet Union. The Israelis are emptying Siberia of Jews, flying them for free to Israel with American donations that they obtain from begging on the American Christian fundamentalist TV Stations. What shutzpa. But it works.

Another thought. If Armenia could entice 50,000 middle class Armenians each worth about $500,000.00; That would mean $25,000,000,000.00 to the Armenian economy.

With an influx of that much money in our economy, we would no longer have to sell our soul to the Russians or the West.

Money has no contience. It seeks safety. If we imitated the Swiss banking system,Armenia would become the Switzerland of the Caucasus.

Even the Azeri's would keep their money in safe Armenian banks.

Unfortunately, the simpletons running the country have no vision. They are afraid even of success. I expected so much more from Armenia after liberation. All we got is another "Banana republic".

Dual cityzenship for Armenians. Excellent idea.

Psychologically uplifting to diaspora Armenians. They would feel that they too belong to the land.

Economically, it will mean that investors will feel more secure. I would not invest in a country where I was not sure of equal protection under the law.

Do u have anything agains Armenia Gayane???

What the hell u mean by "you must be crazy to go back there"?

what's wrong with going back?

I mean, if the current political & economical problems be solved& a better situation comes along, why wouldn't people want to go back?? I'm talking about Armenians from Armenia.

I live in Poland and we have here a lot Armenians from Armenia. Some of them stayed in Poland. But other always want to go back to Armenia. They just earn money for return.

For exemple I live all my life In Poland, my father is Polish. I went to Armenia few times and I always want go back.I know that live there is not easy but I'm not affraid of it.If all Armenians think like Gayane nobody will stay in Armenia.

a great deal has to change in Armenia

starting with the government no more can the office of president/tyrant dictate to and remove judges as he sees fit the people there need to get very involved in the reform of the government they need to support an American style tiers of government the presidential, the legistive, and the judicial, each not under the control of the other the diasporans need to get much more involved as well

I agree with Gayane. I would never go back and I know most who say that they will, will NOT. They just say that they will.

I consider USA as my home. My friends and family are all in the states. Why would I want to change my life and go back? Economic freedom and prosperity? I already have that here.

BTW, I am off to Armenia for a week for the first time in 21 years tomorrow. I am so excited.

regarding the return of the emigrants.

If we base our predictions on lessons from history, chances are most of refugees won't go back. And if we concentrate all of our efforts on improving Armenia's situation that would'nt do it either on the short term.

The reason is that most of these people left Armenia for more secure, prosperous, economically stable lands.

It is very possible that Armenia becomes some day such a country, but not in a near future.Even if Armenia starts to improve the life standards of its citizens these improvements would take years or decades to reach anything close to European standards. By this time the generation that left Armenia will be replaced by the one born on foreign shores, one that has never seen Armenia and thus doesn't have the same level of attachment to the country.

So the question is not "would you go to Armenia if it turned into a prosperous country ",but rather "would you go there and work with all the energy you have to make it into the type of country you want it to be?"

I don't think Armenia can attract (now and for a while) people by presenting good living conditions (if any), only patriotism and a personal attachment and simpathy (social purposes) to the country can keep and bring in people. Many armenians are still in Armenia for these reasons and not because they make a good living there.

Of course, it's very hard to build a country by feelings (or maybe feelings are the main ingredient in the making of a country, good topic to discuss).

What I said might sound pessimistic but I'm sure there are ways out, there must be.

The history of the armenians is full of tough times but we still exist, no?
