The Committee for the Protection of Gyumri’s Historical-Cultural Immovable Monuments and Movable Values issued a statement on Thursday “expressing the concern on behalf of the intelligentsia, artists, thousands of people of Gyumri and beyond” regarding the initiative to display two of Minas Avetisyan’s murals at Zvartnots Airport’s new terminal. It believes the paintings are part of the Shirak province’s cultural heritage and should stay there. One of the frescos in question, “Spinning the Thread”, has already been removed from the wall of Gyumri’s “Galvanometer” plant, the other one, “Millstone”, is due to be removed soon. The Committee, in particular, called on the government to reconsider its decision regarding the removal of the frescoes from Gyumri and on Argentine-Armenian businessman Eduardo Eurnekian, who own the company managing Zvartnots Airport to give up plans to have Minas frescoes and consider the already incurred costs for the restoration of the wall-paintings to be “a donation to the city of Gyumri.” The Committee also called on “all Gyumri natives in and outside Armenia”, nongovernmental organizations, art associations, local authorities, etc. “to combine efforts in finding financial means for the restoration of the frescos, their installation and preservation in a proper place in Gyumri.” Meanwhile, in an interview with Mediamax news agency, Head of the Modern Art Department of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia Sona Harutyunyan said that “in the course of 25 years Gyumri people did not take up any step to preserve the frescos of Minas”. She stressed that 14 more frescos of Armenian painters are still there in the territory of idling plants in Gyumri. “We suggested presenting a project for fresco preservation, as well as sources of financing, however we did not receive any answer,” she said. http://www.armenianow.com/arts_and_culture/30294/armenia_minas_fresco_gyumri Here is what a ԵՐԿԱՆԱՔԱՐ is. I have seen them first hand. Some more fortunate Armenian families would own one and the neighbors would borrow it. http://images.travelpod.com/users/greekcypriot/3.1249754406.a-very-old-stone-hand-mill-.jpg http://www.armenianow.com/sites/default/files/img/imagecache/600x400/minas-frescas.jpg http://www.armenianow.com/sites/default/files/img/imagecache/600x400/minas-frescas.jpg
