Member of the union Davit Hovsepyan states that there are many Armenian families residing in Syria who are willing to return to Armenia, however, the authorities of Armenia do not take practical measures in this respect. In the letter submitted to the Government the authors of the initiative present their demands, which according to them, is a list of proposals to develop a stage-by-stage repatriation program. One of the demands, mentioned in the open letter, is to provide Syrian-Armenians with a one-time free of charge transportation and a transfer of their personal minimum luggage, not allowing private carriers to take advantage of the present situation. Besides, it is demanded to provide Syrian-Armenians with shelters and grant them with favorable terms to get housing, to create favorable conditions for Diaspora Armenians’ children to continue studying at educational institutions, to grant them with favorable terms to get credits, etc. Participant of the picket, Syrian-Armenian Andranik Vardanian says that they have come to Armenia with their whole family, however they have left all their businesses in Syria. Currently they live in their relative’s house. “Syrian-Armenians can neither continue their business nor use their handicraft here. The authorities of Armenia would have better supported us morally and provided us with shelters and job, at least temporary, by the time we manage to settle here,” Vardanian says. Members of Hayazn Union state that many Armenian families not always choose Armenia, preferring to leave for another country and get a more favorable status of a refugee there. Currently 60 000 Armenians reside in Syria, and every measure should be taken to avert their scattering all over the world,” Mr. Poghosyan said. “Delegates, having arrived in Syria from Armenia, met with Armenian community representatives. President Serzh Sargsyan’s brother Levon Sargsyan, who previously served as RA ambassador to Syria, also departed for the country a few days ago,” the expert said, stressing the need to offer the community financial assistance, besides the moral and psychological support. “The problem concerns Armenians worldwide in the face of the threat to security of the given community,”
MosJan
Heavy clashes reported in Syria’s Aleppo http://media.pn.am/media/issue/116/740/photo/116740.jpgJuly 21, 2012 - 17:50 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - There have been heavy clashes between security forces and rebels in Syria's second city of Aleppo, activists say, according to BBC News. The fighting was centred on the Salah al-Din district, but had also spread to Sakhur and Haydariya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Aleppo has so far been spared the daily bloodshed seen in other cities since the uprising began in March 2011. The violence came a day after the UN Security Council voted to extend the UN observer mission for a "final" 30 days. Activists said the clashes in Aleppo between troops and members of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) began in Salah al-Din on Friday July 20 morning. By Friday afternoon, they had spread into Sakhur and Haydariya. Aleppo-based activist Mohammed Saeed said the fighting continued throughout the night until Saturday morning, most of it in Salah al-Din. "Last night was very bad," he told the Associated Press. "There were huge explosions and the gunfire didn't stop for several hours." "The uprising has finally reached Aleppo," he added. Mr Saeed said dozens of FSA fighters had entered from the countryside. Aleppo is not far from Turkey, where the FSA commanders are based. The Local Co-ordination Committees, an activist network, said there had been an "exodus" of Salah al-Din residents "because of fear of a regime bombardment and offensive". MosJan
Armenia’s national carrier uses Syrian unrest as opportunity to raise ticket prices – protest demonstrationJuly 25, 2012 | 16:26 YEREVAN. – A group of activists from Armenia’s civil initiatives held a protest Wednesday in front of Armavia Airline Company’s—which is Armenia’s national carrier—central office in the capital, Yerevan. The demonstrators were protesting against Armavia’s increasing of the prices of the Aleppo-Yerevan and Yerevan-Aleppo flight tickets. They noted that taking advantage of such warlike situation and pursuing business interests is shamelessness. “The Arab airlines likewise could have increased the ticket prices, but the price fluctuation there was small. Armenia has had very difficult days, and our compatriots of the Diaspora were along our side in those difficult days. Armavia is the sole organization in Armenia which reacted to the Syrian incidents and thought that it is a convenient time to raise the ticket prices and people will give their last cent to transfer their relatives to Armenia,” protester Apres Zohrabyan said, and stressed that Armavia raised the ticket prices virtually twice. Another protester, Nvard Manasyan, stated that Armavia cannot be called Armenia’s national carrier because it is taking an anti-national step for the Armenians at this crucial moment. The protesters were shouting “shame on you” in front of Armavia’s central office and making a call to no longer use the Company’s services. And no one from Armavia Company approached the demonstrators. The latter hope the matter will not reach the dimension of a nationwide boycott and Armavia will review its price policy. MosJan
Syrian Armenians fleeing country amid violence http://media.pn.am/media/issue/117/346/photo/117346.jpgJuly 26, 2012 - 18:01 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - As fighting is raging in major Syrian cities refugees have streamed across the border in the thousands, settling with relatives wherever possible, Gulfnews said. Syrian Armenians are among those who are fleeing, and many who can afford to move back to Armenia are doing so. But the vast majority are settling with relatives in Lebanon until the situation back home returns to normalcy. Lina, a middle-aged woman who fled with her children, speaks of the horrors she left behind in Aleppo. “Shabiha came and beat up businessmen who closed their shops in Aleppo,” she said. Shabiha, are pro-government militias with a notorious reputation for savagery. “Some were beaten so badly they had to be hospitalised,” she added. Her young son witnessed a bombing in the Syrian capital and was severely tramautised by the experience. “He sobbed uncontrollably for two days,” she said. But her son is among the many Syrian children exposed to such brutality and devastation. Many children, Lina says, are displaying aggressive behaviour and will be pyschologically affected for the rest of their lives. While Lina and her children are safe in Beirut for the time being, she remains nervous. “I fear for my community’s long-term survival,” she said speaking about Armenians in Syria. She is among many minorities in Syria who fear that the collapse of the regime will adversely affect their respective communities. Many minorities still believe the Baath regime protects them. Lina is particularly grateful that the regime opened its doors to the Armenian survivors of the 1915 Genocide at the hands of the Turks. “We remain loyal to the country, and I cannot wait to go home,” she said.
