What is next? Go back and call the capital city “khankendi”? To this day we don’t know who that SSO “khan” was. Was it “panah”, the nemesis of the princes of Artsakh?I don’t give a rat’s arse if some choose to call it NKR. When did “nagorno” become an Armenian word? What the h* does that russky- ilyichski “nagorno/nakorno /kagormo“ mean anyway? OK. “mountainous/ԼԵՌՆԱՅԻՆ”. There may be a method to this madness as there is another non-mountainous garagak at the Caspian coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepanakert According to medieval Armenian sources, the settlement was first mentioned as Vararakn (Վարարակն**, meaning "rapid spring" in Armenian) which it remained until it was renamed Khankendi in 1847.[3][4] Azerbaijani sources generally say that the settlement was founded in the late eighteenth century by a Karabakh khan, and was thus called Khankendi (Turkic for "the khan's village").In 1923 Khankendi was renamed Stepanakert by the Soviet government to honor Stepan Shahumyan, leader of the 26 Baku Commissars, and, after the Shusha pogrom had resulted in major destruction at Shusha, the former regional capital, Stepanakert was made the capital of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. In time, Stepanakert grew to become the region's most important city (a status it received in 1940). Its population rose from 10,459 in 1939 to 33,000 in 1978. ** Above, someone translated it as “rapid spring”. I can’t find an all inclusive English word to depart the real meaning of “varar/plenty of water” i.e. “fertile”. I would have it as “well irrigated”***. You will note that the name is composed of two words “վարար/varar” and “ակն / akn”. We know what ak/akn like in “աչք/eye means, “spring”. Some people call it “goez”. Arpa
ԲԻՒՐԱԿՆ BIURAKN Bingöl (Kurdish(zaza or kurmanî dialect of Kurdish: Çewlik') (Turkish for: a thousand lakes) is a city in Eastern Turkey. It is also known as Çabakcur, which means violent** water in Armenian. It is surrounded by mountains and a large number of glacier lakes, hence the name. **NO!! It does not mean “violent”, it means "ten thousand springs”.To see where Biurakn is, draw a straight line from Kharberd to Mush, it will be right in the middle. Note above the furkish variant of the name Çabakcur, which in fact is the Armenian Ճապաղջուր/Japaghjour. I had known about that suburb of Kharberd, but I did not know it was another name for Բիւրակն/Biurakn***. All this time I thought “ճապաղ/japagh” meant “shallow”. It seems it actually means “spread/expansive”. Armenian Բիւր-Ակն/ biur-akn meant ten thousand springs, those others interpreted it as one “thousand lakes”. It is the headwaters, the birthplace of the River Arax. (Not araz, please!) Also, to not forget the village of Biurakan in the Arakatsotn region and its namesake the Astrophysical Observatory; I have no idea why that town was named so, Is it a play on words/բառախաղ?? i.e “ten thousand springs”? Or did they mean "ten thousand eyes/stars" http://hy.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D4%B2%D5%B5%D5%B8%D6%82%D6%80%D5%A1%D5%AF%D5%A1%D5%B6 http://www.armeniapedia.org/images/9/95/Byurakan_observatory-dcp2632.jpg http://www.aras.am/BAO/image003.jpg *** Those who subscribe to that orthography may search “բՅուրակն”. Another subject maybe? Arpa
An excellent article, if somehow long and detailed it is worth a read. From here; http://www.armenianow.com/karabakh/44217/naira_hayrumyan_karabakh_essayMy ardent wish and plea is, before we subconsciously blurt out that furkish name of Artsakh, we take a deep breath, count to ten and consciously and deliberately use the Armenian names.======A bit of folklore about the name Vararakn.----In the courtyard of this restaurant there is a small church, Vararakn. Vararakn is the ancient name of Stepanakert, which means a “full-flowing stream”. The legend has it that some 1,500 years ago King Vachagan the Pious vowed to God to build 300 churches across the Armenian land. He traveled around the country and in the place where his horses were stomping on the ground to warn there was water underground, he would dig a spring and build a church on that site. Vararakn is one of those surviving churches.=====And here, the antidote to that fictitious fable about khojali. Note the raining of grads at the peoples’ houses and homes.------My dream came true, but things worked out not quite in a way I wanted them to be. It turned out that for my dream to come true my city and myself had to go through the worst – a war. The city was heavily bombed. People hiding in the basements of houses, mostly women and children, were all together counting the number of Grads – deadly artillery rockets of Soviet make used by Azeris to shell Armenian towns and villages – falling all over the place, destroying houses, killing and wounding civilians. The count was usually 40. Then, while the Azeris were recharging their mortars, we had some 20 minutes in which we could run outside to get to a spring and fetch some water. My mother-in-law would come out of the basement/bomb shelter and for some reason start sweeping the broken glass caused by the shelling off the area at the entrance to the house. She kept saying that order must be maintained at all times.
Arpa
http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=16282&page=4&&do=findComment&comment=297655 Over the Holidays a friend showed me a beautiful colorful map.. I said beautiful, and I mean it, however here is the ugly part. When I saw the title in big block letters REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA and REPUBLIC OF MOUNTAINOUS KARABAGH,Mercy me! At least it did not say nagorno or daghlik. When will we ever learn to speak Armenian? When did karakag become an Armenian word?I had an urge to throw up all that good food we had.Mountainous karagak? Who prints these maps? After how many glasses of oghi? And who renames those historical towns and villages to sound like and rhyme with the furk-asszeri names. As I said in another post, one of our guests was the highly educated, university professor from Yerevan, during our idle talk, I asked her if she was a native Yerevanian. She said that she was loretsi, that she was born in Vanadzor. I said. Do you mean karakilisa(black church)? It took her a while to realize what I was saying. She said No, when she was born in that town it was known as Kirovakan.. Soon we will rename that town as putinakan /պուցինական. I have said this before, let me repeat. My biggest pet peeve is when they renamed kelbajar as karvajar just to sound like and rhyme. HUH! What the hell is karvajar? Stone merchant? ** Where did they pull that one out? Historically that town was known as Khachen, not karvajar. What the hell is karvajar? What were the historical names of Hadrut and Martakert? *** Are they native Armenian names or somehow turkified? Remember when Stepanaket was called khankenti? Diss that commie clown Stepan Shahumian who lived and died in boku, thousand miles away from his birthplace**** and homeland.. Don’t we have other heroes?Did he build that Capital City of Artsakh?Good riddance. Another time, above we saw that my friend’s soldier son was stationed at the liberated town of jebrail ,now renamed Jrakan***** HUH! How many glasses of oghi did our so called historians have in deciding on that name?** According to some sources, there had been a village there named Karavajar. Whatever the h- #%$ it may mean?***Yes, we know that “kert” is an Armenian word, to meant “built by” կերտել, like in Tigranakert.****The village of his birth is now known as Stepanavan, which intil 1923 was known as jalaloghlu. So, Was he born in Jalaloghli? Who the hell is jalal and his son jalaloghu? May he go to that heaven of jalaloghli!, and rest with his son oghlu . *****It is the furko-Arabo-Persian version of Gabriel., Գաբրիէլ That it was renamed Jrakan, to just sound like and rhyme with the furkish jebrail.. The historic name of that town was Vardanakert.
