Harut
why are we calling our homeland Hayastan and not Hayk as before?i have a feeling that the ending "stan" is not Armenian.i know there are Armenian words with "stan", but still... Also, why didn't the government of Karabagh change the name of the country to Artsakh?
ThornyRose
Isn't the "-stan" an indicator of Persian influence? Persian influence was pretty widespread, as you have even a name such as "Turkestan."I also read somewhere here that there are aspects of Persian culture no longer existent in theirs but existent in yours, like certain names, such as Arsen. As for Karabagh, I don't know, but I think that people usually prefer to stick to what they have been used to. For example, after the 1960 coup, the military dictatorship tried to change old names in the districts of Ankara. "Ulus" became "Cumhuriyet Meydanı" or something on signs and paper, but not so with the people, who eventually won out. Also, for example, they make up a lot of Turkish words, new ones. Some of them make sense, some of them not. Some people press for the use of these "neo-Turkish" words, but, unless they are very practical, usually the Arabic or French loanwords are stuck to... This is a common human reality, it appears.Do Armenians often call Karabagh, Artsakh?
Taguhi
Dear Harut,Arcakh is an Armenian name of this region.Karabah is a Persian or Turkish name. Because this region for a long time was under Persian control Karabah name became popular. Today olso Armenians call this area Gharabagh but Armenian name is Arcakh. Its' a very old name and I think was used by Armenian before this region was called Kharabagh. I don't know today which one is more correct in Armenian language but I think that both of them. Name Karabagh became a part of world history because other nation use this one. Arcakh is maybe more Armenian and traditional. Maybe goverment want to cut off for good their historical relation with Azerbaycan and they want to show Armenian tradition of this region. Taguhi
I forgot one thing. I think "stan" mean country and it's came from Persian language. In Armenian their are names of countres with stan for example Lehastan - Poland.By the way in Turkish during Ottoman Empire was used name Lehistan. Now in Turkish are olso some name with stan for exempleMacaristan, Mongolistan, Hindistan, Kurdistan..... Turkish has olso a lot of Persian influence. Because of it I think "stan" is from Persian.I think the popular word "jan" is olso Persian. Not only Armenian, Persian and Turks used it but olso Uzbek, Afgans and others from Middle East. MJ
I am not an expert to any degree, but if I am not mistaken the suffix "stan" traces its origins to Sanskrit. Isn't it?
Guest Fadi
I think you are right MJ. as for Artsak, I heard that it was not Armenian but Caucasian Albanian name. I'm not sure about this, I heard a name sounding like Gouri, Kuri or something like this as the Armenian name for Karabagh. As for the name Karabagh, it's a Persian mixed word with Turkish, something like Kara-Bagh etc...
Harut
i know what word Karabagh mean. the question is why doesn't the government change it to Artsakh. being an Armenian state, having Armenian as official language, being based on Armenian culture, why do they use Karabagh when there is an Armenian version of it, Artsakh.Karabagh, actually Gharabagh, means Black (ghara) Garden (bagh). it's in Turkish. it became Artsax because there is no sound "gh" in Russian. As for "Hayastan" i would love to see it being called "Hayq", more Armenian word than Hayastan.hay - the name our nationq - is the suffix that makes the noun plural in old Armenian Hayq - Armenians i think 'stan' is not Armenian but is widly used in Armenian.besides country names there are also many other words that end in 'stan'.burastan, tsarastan, karastan,....... dragon
There is more and more...Barsgastan, Dajigistan, Ghazakhustan, Khurkhuzistan, Turkmenistan, Kurdistan etc... Well, stan is a ''masnig'' which shows the place where the ethnic groups sit, live, born and die. The ancient name of Armenia was Hayasa and by time it became Hayastan, where Hays (Hayer) exist. Hope you satisfied
