Arpa
ՏԱԹԵՒ, ՏԱԹԵՒԻԿ, ԹԱԴԵՈՍ, ՏԱՏԵՈՍ? ՏԱՏԻՈՍ? Tatev Tatevik Thaddeus and Tateos? Tatios.? ** **I typed in those ridiculous spellings for comic relief. Anyone here know a male person named Tatev? Even if this may best belong here;http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=7991&st=0&p=205535&hl=names%20&fromsearch=1entry205535I chose to post it here for obvious reasons.----I have never known a boy named “TATEV/THADEV” except one, a member of the clergy. We know about girls‘ name Tatev and TateviK . Why? As it seems to derive from an ostensibly male person, Tatevos , a variation of Thaddeus (Greek), at times also known as Jude/Judas(Hebrew) ,Not that judas known as “մատնիչ Յուդայ“. The Apostle, partner of Bartholomew. What does “tatev/thadew“ really mean?Is it an abbreviation of Thaddeus ԹադեւոսԹատիոս/Tatios? Very few of our children are named Tateos,Tatios except some clergy . Neither do we name our children Batholomew/Բարթողոմեոս. How many name their sons Թովմաս, yes we know Thomas/Tom. See Tom Vardapetian/Vartabedian, or Mateos? See Mateos Zarifian- Mateos Zarifian was a great Armenian poet who like many others in the beginning of this century fell victim to tuberculosis at early age. TADEVOS -From Old Armenian name Tadeos which means "the one who praises". There is a version that this name comes from Hebrew name Ghebos "wise". The short forms are Tatos, Tato, Tevos. The corresponding surnames are Tadevosyan, Tevosyan, Tatosyan, Tatoyan.ՏԱԹԵՎԻԿ -Խտեղցվել է Տաթևի վանքի անունից: Հնում գործածական չի եղել որպես անձնանուն. երևում է միայն վերջերս:TATEVIK -From the name of the Armenian monastery Tatev+ik diminutive suffix. It has appeared only recently. In traditional orthography we will read them with the Ւ/ Hyuyn Not Վ/Ve in accordance with the source where the letter U is used. Above we read that the letter was inserted to separate two vowels I.e Ե/ E and Ո/O just as in the case of Գեորգ/ Georg/ Գեւոր/Gevorg. That brings us to the MOTHER of all Tatev/ Tateviks. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cd/Tatev_Monastery_from_a_distance.jpg http://www.medievalarchives.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/tatevmonastero.jpg The Monastery of Tatev (Armenian: Տաթև) is a 9th century Armenian monastery located in the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southern Armenia. The term "Tatev" usually refers to the monastery. It stands on a plateau on the edge of the deep gorge of the Orotan (Vorotan) River. It became the bishopric seat of Syunik and played a significant role in the history of the region as a centre for economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity. In the 14th and 15th centuries Tatev Monastery hosted one of the most important Armenian medieval universities which contributed to the education of science, religion and philosophy; reproduction of books and development of miniature painting. Scholars of Tatev University contributed to the preservation of Armenian culture and creed during one of its most turbulent periods in its history---Note above that Tatev is also a village in the neighborhood. Which came first? Just as another source says the Monastery was founded in the 4th century, yet the 9th and 14th and 15th c. refers to when it became a university of sorts, a center of learning.Note above that in the case of the monastery the orthography is jumbled around. Where as the translit of Thadevos/Thaddeus it would have been ԹԱՏԵՒ/ԹԱԴԵՒ not ՏԱԹԵՒ. Edited April 28, 2011 by Arpa
