(This is a follow-up to my other thread of ԵՂԵՌՆ where some of us use the word ՏՕՆ festival in reference to April 24th.)

Please! Please again. The word is spelled with letter Օ/O, not Ո/Vo,. ՏՕՆ not Տոն otherwise we lose all contact to its original meaning. In another post we talked about . Why are some of us still calling April 24th [/b] Նահատակաց Տօն[/b] where the source had spelled it as Տոն Նահատակաց ?

This is , at best a contradiction in terms as “nahatak” means a somber occasion and “ton” means festival. One dictionary defines

ՏՕՆ= Festival, holiday, celebration.

There are many words formed around it. Let’s see how many we know, including but not limited to “տօնածառ/ tonatsar/festival/ holiday tree”.

 

No matter where we look the word is associated with festival, merriment , celebration a happy occasion.

Brings us to the Armatakan Searching the Aramatakan for ՏՈՆ will get you no where, it is ՏՕՆ

It goes on saying that the word is native Armenian “dapni” which in fact means ԶՈՀ/ sacrifice/sacrificial animal.

Please don’t ask me how “dapni” turns to ՏՕՆ/ton. Unless we read it as ՏԱՒՆ/taun. To not confuse with դափնիdaphne, laurel. Why don’t we call our daughters Դափնէ/ Lurael/Laura? Yes, we call them Lori/Lorik!!!

 

PS My ancestors called the Saturday laundry “khash” “don”. Turns out it is from the furkish to mean “underwear”.

 

Once again please ! It is ՏՕնապետ not ՏՈնապետ. Replacing the Օ with Ո disconnects us from the original etymology of our language. Does anyone care?

Meaning “master of ceremonies (emcee) even if it in fact means “master of the house/տՈՒնապետ”. We see at least in one dialect, that of Artsakh ՏՈՒՆ/house is ՏՕՆ. This may be cause for another subject ,i.e Տուն/տան/տանիք/**house/home.

Yes, it is rarely used as a personal name, yet I have known at least one person with that name.

This is funny. The one “tonapet” I knew was an apprentice at a graphic arts studio. Whenever the foreman called on him him - “tonapet”!! he would answer with “AYO VARPET”!!

 

From that joke of a site known as Armenian Names… Is this the picture of "tonapet"?

TONAPET

From Armenian ton "holiday" + pet "head" i.e. "head of holiday". It is a rare name now. The corresponding surname is Tonapetyan.

 

What do տօնավաճառ and փառատօն mean?

**Consider the word Ընտանիք/family, i.e people living in the same house, under the same roof.
