MosJan Posted November 9, 2001 Report Share Posted November 9, 2001 IRAQ, ARMENIA EAGER TO EXPAND RELATIONSArmenian prime minister Andranik Margarian said today it was high time for Armenia and Iraq to step up efforts to make their relations closer. Margarian was meeting Iraq's charge d'affaires in Armenia AbbasAl-Badri. The prime minister said opening of Armenia's embassy in Baghdad and Iraq's embassy in Yerevan would certainly help rapprochement between Iraq and Armenia. Margarian noted during the meeting that the Iraqis had showed a warm welcome to thousands of Armenian refugees who fled Turkey in the wake of the 1915 genocide. The prime minister said that being located at the crossroads of Europe and Middle East Armenia was eager to build constructive relations with all the regional countries. He said relations with Arab countries and Iran occupy a special place in Armenia's foreign policy. Besides economic, also cultural and education cooperation was stressed. The Armenian prime minister also referred to the Karabagh conflict regulation process, stressing that it was not of religious nature, by which Azerbaijan is trying to raise Islam professing nations against Armenia.
