During the session, Prosperous Armenia Partys Naira Zohrabyan asked Gul: Dont you think that as soon as Turkey has the courage to accept and recognize the Armenian Genocide, committed by Ottoman Turkey [in 1915], it will be able to be free from the heavy burden of the past and take its place among civilized nations? To no ones surprise, and to an audience of delegates that may yet be impressionable on the issue, Gul took the opportunity to remind the Council of Europe that his country has long favored a study of the tragic events and went on to remind PACE that Turkey also suffered but rose above the history that continues to plague the Armenians. Though nearly three million Turks were killed while moving from the Balkans, these events were not spoken about for many years in order not to hand such sorrow to new generations and not to create hate in neighboring countries against them. We have always looked at the future. Some MP in the parliament may say that Turkey committed genocide against Armenia 100 years ago. But if someone asks them how, where and when it happened, no correct answer can be found. The president even told members that during the years in question, Armenian churches functioned without disturbance in Istanbul. There was no doubt that many had been killed in the fighting, but the term genocide requires a specific intention against a group of a particular religious or ethnic background. But Armenians had held senior positions in the Ottoman court and had even represented the Empire at a diplomatic level, Gül said, appealing to his audience to look to the future together as friends. Gul couldnt have asked for a better chance to propagandize as his nation continues its courtship with Europe. And he can thank an Armenian delegate for serving up the opportunity.
