Really.

 

Let's knock off the head-butting until at least 12:01 am January 7th. In the meantime...LET'S TALK FOOD!

 

I'm looking forward to my annual Christmas-to-New Year's week of basturma and eggs (with soft lavash) for breakfast. I'm sure my wife can smell it already.

 

I'll officially kick off the week of gluttony this Friday with some koobideh, rice and barbequed vegetables from my local Persian restaurant. All sprinkled with generous amounts of sumac, of course.

 

Saturday will be a day of culinary rest, and with Sunday will arrive Christmas Eve lasagne courtesy of my Hye mother. No she did not learn how to make it from my father--the lasagne will be the frozen kind.

 

Christmas day will be awesome deli platters of meats and cheeses for the make-them-yourself sandwich bar courtesy of my kh'namis.

 

After that, it'll be time to lose 20+ pounds of extra kebab I've been carrying around.

 

 

Anyone else care to make us all hungry???

Nushe jan Mike! I have been hanging out with my Mexican friends more often lately...gee I wonder why! Could it be the tamales (beef, pork, chicken, cheese and jalapeno), champurado, posole etc? My students are planning a potluck for Friday, it should be an obscene gorge-fest. Mexicans and other Latinos are not known for being stingy with food! There will be every kind of enchilada, tamal, pupusa(from my Salvadoreno students), posole, menudo, chile relleno and my favorite that is little known to non-Mexicans-potato tacos! These are tortillas filled, yes, with spicy potatoes and cheese and fried! Ay que sabrosos estan! The kids and their parents vie with each other to provide the most copious amount of food possible.

 

As for my family we are planning on catering Persian food from Darya Restaurant. Sorry, it may not sound very traditional Christmas, but it is what we like,plus none of us feel like cooking this year, we outdid ourselves on Thanksgiving.

 

My favorite Christmas food and drink are an eggnog latte from Starbucks, and panetone bread.

The LA Times Health section just did a piece on making tamales without lard. You know how important holiday tamales are to Mexicans, but they've gotta keep modern health concerns in mind! Welcome to the 21st Century. The kicker is...the Aztecs originally made them without lard; the spaniards introduced it. Things have come full circle.

That's exactly our story. We have a "sandwich bar" on Christmas to make it easier on everyone. Between my family and my wife's there are 20 of us, so cooking would be a big burden. Thanksgiving however, is still a nice full-blown sit-down meal.

Well, I just rolled in after stuffing my face at school today! Just to show the contrast between cultures, my one African American student brought a single bag of chips(large size though!),and my Anglo student brought a pack of oreo cookies. The rest brought vats of tamales, pupusas, huge bowls of macaroni salad, obscenely big cakes, trays piled with quesadillas and taquitos, mole coming out the ears, on and on! I plan on teaching at this predominantly Latino school forever!

Just a clarification for the non-California members, lest you think Mexicans eat moles, "mole" (mo-lay) is a sauce made from unsweetened chocolate, and is served with either chicken, turkey or pork. When you come to California, or better yet, go to Mexico, try it, it is muy delicioso!

 

Also posole is a soup made from puffed corn and pork, and is served with radishes, red cabbage and crackers or tostada shells.

 

Menudo is beef tripe soup, with puffed corn and some versions have tomato with it.

 

chile relleno means "Stuffed chile" is a big chile stuffed with cheese, and some versions have ground beef too, very similar to a dolma.

 

Pupusas are a Salvadoran specialty the are stuffed fat corn tortillas, similar in design to our pita, with a range of stuffings: cheese, pork, potatoes, beef, olives etc.

No, I didn't think they were eating moles! (Non CA resident here) I actually thought you meant mole a s short for guacamole. I could eat that, with nachos/and or bean wraps (that I make! I do them good!) till the cows come home

 

Hhhm! The unsweetened choclate! Unusual. I wonder what it is like ...

 

Are pupusas kind of a cross between the tacos and pittas?

 

 

we can all have a forum trip to mexico , with the magic persian carpet and take us all away there! Ha ha ha.

 

Y'all posts cheered me up today, I've had a not so nice day because I have a boss who rules with a lot of tyranny, he bullies. I just found out today.
