Guest
November 8, 2000 http://www.ntvmsnbc.com/news/42724.asp French Senate recognizes Armenian "genocide" allegations Some fear move will damage Franco-Turkish ties ParisNTV-MSNBC & NEWS WIRES November 8 - French lawmakers approved a draft law recognizing World War I killings in eastern Turkey as genocide on Tuesday night, with 164 votes in favor, 40 against and four abstentions. The National Assembly, the lower house of the French parliament, first officially recognized the events as genocide in a vote in May, 1998. However, the French government and presidency opposed the vote, fearing it would upset Turkey. The Armenians say 1.5 million of their people were killed as part of the Ottoman Empire’s campaign to force them out of eastern Turkey between 1915 and 1923. Turkey says the death count is inflated and that Armenians were killed or displaced as the Ottoman Empire tried to quell civil unrest. The Ottoman Empire became Turkey in 1923. As the French debate began late on Tuesday, about 100 Armenians demonstrated in front of the Senate building, calling on the senators to recognize the killings as genocide. The resolution will now be sent to the national parliament. Meanwhile, attempts by some senators to have other "genocides" recognised was rejected. Although both articles are from same source (Turkish section of MSNBC), and published in same day, but it is not difficult to see that articles are different (in context). I think we should save and archive every material related to genocide for further/later reference (in any language). The second question is publishing copyright material in this (and other) non-commercial forum (with small number of participants). I consulted with many guys (and some lawyer), they couldn’t answer exactly how law describes this case. But looking at the some major non-commercial discussion boards (including one in MSNBC!), we could see publishing of copyrighted materials by private participant (and MSNBC doesn’t censor/delete these posting)There is another situation. As much as I remember in one message of yours there were mentioned about limitation of space on this server (I can’t remember where was it). If so, there is solution for this (saving/archiving some branches to other server with the same format). This is technical question that we could discuss in private. Guest
Ararat the question is not about the space on our server. For text files it's not a problem. Most of us don't understand turkish and we can't compare the english and turkish versions of that article to see the differences. Guest
The parliament of the European Union has added its voice to criticism of Turkey, over the mass killing of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire early last century. In a resolution, the European Parliament called on Turkey to recognise publicly that the killings were genocide. Turkey has already reacted angrily to a similar vote in the French Senate. The United States Congress withdrew a similar resolution after Turkey threatened diplomatic reprisals. Estimates of the number of Armenians killed range from six-hundred-thousand to one-and-a-half-million; Turkey says they were not victims of systematic slaughter but died in fighting as the Ottoman Empire broke up. The European Parliament's move comes as Turkey tries toovercome criticism of its human rights record and seek full EU membership. >From the newsroom of the BBC World Service
Guest
Paying homage to the dead French senate recognizes Armenian genocide By PAUL CLINTON GLENDALE -- When it comes to human rights, France has succeeded where the United States has failed, according to a local Armenian group. The French senate's passage of a resolution recognizing accusations that Ottoman Turkey carried out genocide against Armenians in the first quarter of the 20th Century stands in contrast to the failure of a similar bill in the U.S. Congress last month, a leader of the group said. "France does take the issue of human rights much more seriously than the U.S.," Alex Sardar, executive director of the Western region of the Armenian National Committee, said. "It doesn't put the American government in a very good light." The group's regional office is in Glendale. The French legislative body's passage of the resolution on Tuesday could cause tension between the two countries at a time when Turkey has applied for membership in the European Union. Following the overwhelming adoption of the bill, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Huseyin Dirioz spoke out against it. "We reject and condemn this decision, which constitutes an extremely unfortunate and mistaken step," Dirioz said. Armenia and the Armenian diaspora -- the approximately 6 million Armenians living outside their homeland -- believe Turkey killed more than 1.5 million Armenians in eastern Anatolia in 1915. The Turkish government denies responsibility for the deaths. A bill similar to the French resolution died in Congress last month after President Clinton and other high-ranking officials prevented a vote on it. In a letter, Clinton urged House speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois) to pull the bill from the floor so it wouldn't adversely affect U.S. interests.
