MosJan Posted April 25, 2002 Report Share Posted April 25, 2002 GEORGIANS ARE NOT THE FRENCH “The Turkish people have enough courage to accept the tragic crime it once committed,” Georgian parliament chairwoman Nino Burjandaze said last April 18 during a visit to mostly Armenian populated region of Samtskhe Javakhk in response to a question whether the Georgian parliament was going to officially acknowledge the Armenian genocide. Mrs. Burjanadze has rather a high opinion about the Turks, the indispensable friends of her compatriots. But the question is whether the Georgian lawmakers have enough courage to remain silent for one minute to commemorate the victims of the genocide, committed by their friends Turks. Mrs. Burjanadze was on April 24, when Armenians around the world pay tribute to the genocide victims, in Ukraine. On that day the Armenian member of the Georgian parliament Van Bayburdian addressed his fellow lawmakers, requesting that they pay tribute to the genocide victims by one minute of silence. This was harshly opposed by his Azeri fellow lawmakers, who were interrupting Bayburdian, and later trying to attack him. This was stopped by security guards. Deputy chairman G. Tsereteli halted the parliament session and prohibited any announcement on the Armenian genocide. The Azerbaijani mass media seems to be in ecstasy over this move of “brave Georgian parliamentarians.” The Baku-based daily Zerkalo, for instance, advises to “conduct educational work with Bayburdian,” so that he does not confuse Georgia with France (the parliament of which officially recognized the genocide).
