Guest Posted October 9, 2000 Report Share Posted October 9, 2000 1 Man Stabbed to Death, 2 Others Hurt By SUE FOX One man was stabbed to death and two others suffered minor injuries during a fight early Saturday morning, police said. Patrol officers responded at 12:53 a.m. to a fight in the 4100 block of Fulton Avenue, said Det. Richard Yep of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Division. They found blood spattered near the scene, but there was no one in sight. Moments later, one of the victims called for an ambulance from a nearby location, leading police to three Armenian men who had been stabbed. The most seriously hurt, Rubik Babayan, 32, of Glendale, had been stabbed multiple times in the upper torso, Yep said. He was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he died at 5:10 a.m. The two other victims, 27-year-old Tigran Malekon of Hollywood and 23-year-old Garen Avetian of Glendale, were driven by friends to Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, police said. They were treated for minor injuries to their hands and buttocks. Several people apparently witnessed the brawl, and police are trying to track down and interview them, Yep said. Detectives are not sure how many suspects were involved or what the motive was. At this time, police have no reason to believe the violence was motivated by ethnic rivalry. Last spring, tensions between Armenians and Latinos flared in Glendale, leading to the killing of a Latino high school student and, less than a week later, the wounding of an Armenian teen in a drive-by shooting. Guest Posted October 10, 2000 Report Share Posted October 10, 2000 Absolutely terrible. Not sure the diaspora in general realizes what is going on in the Los Angeles area with many Armenian youths. Do other cities have this going on? Why is this happening??? It may be racist, but I was brought up to believe Armenian families were better than this. I'm sure socio-economic factors are to blame. The more recent waves of immigrants are not as fortunate as the prior ones. However, where are the parents? Loving, strong families--isn't that our biggest asset as Armenians? Family creates Armenian Pride creates Family creates Armenian Pride... Are organizations like the AGBU doing anything to address the Armenian gang problem we have in Los Angeles? I may be way off base here, but so much attention is directed at Yerevan and we've got a MAJOR problem going on here. These kids need help and support that they're evidentally not getting at home. Maybe they do have loving homes and forming gangs as a defense is just a fact of life in parts of the city. I dunno, but it makes me absolutely f*cking sick to my stomach. Armenian kids deserve better lives than this, especially when I see bunches of jewelry-laced Armenians with BMW's and Mercedes zipping up and down my street everyday. The diaspora in America needs to wake up, it's 2000 and times have changed. The recent PBS Special and June 1978 National Geographic article, THE PROUD ARMENIANS are pipe-dreams for some of our brothers and sisters. And Armenian-on-Armenian assaults?!?...How dare a Hye brother do the work of a turk!
