The breakdown of "Unity" bloc, the possibility of which was so much spoken of lately, seems to have become real. Today the constituent parts of the bloc - the Republican and People's Parties, carry out active consultations with the political forces, represented in the parliament, to form new alliances. "Unity", established by the Republican and People's Parties to participate in the parliamentary elections of 1999, won a convincing victory. In total, the representatives of "Unity" got 71 from the 131 seats in the parliament. In the statement of the newly established bloc it was said that the alliance is formed considering the importance of the upcoming elections for Armenia's future. The leaders of the bloc especially stressed that the participation in the elections with a common list is only the first step on the path to the "future long-term cooperation". After "Unity's" victory at the elections there were no doubts that it was this union of parties of Vazgen Sarkisian and Karen Demirchian that would head the political force in the country at least during the nearest 4 years. But already then several observers in Yerevan spoke of the possibility of the easy split of "Unity" under certain circumstances. On October 27, 1999, when the leaders of "Unity" - Premier Vazgen Sarkisian and Speaker Karen Demirchian were killed in the National Assembly of Armenia, it became apparent that sooner or later "Unity" will stop to exist.
