No one in my family has information because my great grandmother did not share it. (Hmmmm, wonder why? Perhaps a little too painful, as most of her family was massacred!) I am sorry I cant be of any more help but I am trying to do the same myself.... My grandparents had lost all their family too. they are both dead now, and any information any would have in my family is my aunt, but she hasnt been in touch with us since before I was born!My famliy name is Kouioumjian. Guest Posted December 18, 2000 Report Share Posted December 18, 2000 Hello and welcome, as I see from those names are West Armenian, there should have been some registration document mentioning your family tree and history, in the ottoman registration archioves, but now the Turks don't want let them see, the best option is that you find out wether there are people in Syria (the country which now has the biggest West Armenian population, the migrants aside) so I suggest you contact the Syrian embassy, culture house etc... where you live, the highest Armenian concentration in Syria is in Aleppo. Guest Posted December 19, 2000 Report Share Posted December 19, 2000 Recently I read in newspaper that there's a new published book in Armenia about Armenian surnames (a few thousand surnames if I'm not mistaken). I hope to get a copy soon. I think Babajian (or maybe Babajanyan) is most used by Armenians from Iran. Murgerditchian may be Mkrtichyan or Mkrtchyan. Just don't expect to go back to centuries with surnames like those. I know for example that many Armenians form Syria who came to Armenia on 1946 or 1966 just made their last names using their grandads' or profession names. But I think that the both names are West Armenians, Jian is typically West-Armenian, It would have been Chian within the Iranahay , but I haven't seen many Armenians with chian endings in the Iranahay Armenian community. So I think that those names he says are both west Armenian, he says that he is decendant of the Genocide survivors ! So most logically these names are West Armenian. Guest Posted December 19, 2000 Report Share Posted December 19, 2000 There was a famous hotel in Constantinople called The Murgerditch, which was run by an Armenian family of the same name. After the war it was owned by Germans. A photo of it appears in a book of Armenian postcards published in France about 15 years ago - sorry I don't know the title.
