Azat
quote:Originally posted by Thorny Rose:I couldn't remember all the answers, but you had all the brainy ones anyway! This was what I prepared shortly after I put up the question (all of this assuming you DO have a ruler or a household measurer [sorry I haven't added that!]):One way is to measure the temperature at the bottom of the building and at the very top – the difference will enable you to calculate the height. Another way:Tie the thermometer to a string long enough, go to the top of the building, let it down, and then measure the length of the string. Another:Put the thermometer on the ground, standing up. Within as small an interval of time as possible (to ensure accuracy), measure the lengths of the shadows of both thermometer and building; also measure the length of the thermometer. Then, with the proportionalities, you have the height of the building! Yet another:We now (from the previous step) know the length of the thermometer. We call in the fire-fighters and make use of their ladder to align the thermometer along the building, and count how many thermometers the building makes. Then... We call ourselves Laz! More:Go to the top of the building, drop (not “throw”!) the thermometer, record the time it takes to hit the ground and shatter , and then calculate the height, h, of the building from h = 0.5*g*t*t. (OK, I’m beating it outta here! Jumping in the lake! )Thorny, I actually thought of couple that you mentioned above as well. The shadow one and the measuring the thermometer and fitting it on the building (fireman one). I also thought you can measure the thermometer, then step away from the building to 100 meters and hold the thermometer away from your eye until it covers the entire building. And bases on the small triangle that you create between your eye and the thermometer, you can calculate the height of the building. What are you studying in school?I need a lake to jump in to. It is super hot in LA today.

Harut
quote:Originally posted by Azat:Okay, create a grid on a football field. 5 by 5. 25 equal squares. If you draw this grid, the square in the upper left-hand corner we could say is one, and the one next to it is two, three, four, five, and then the line below that is six, seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12... All the way to 25.Now put a person in each square. You have to move each person from the square they are into the square of one of his adjacent squares. So number one can move to square number two, or number six, for example.Number two can move to number one. Or number three, or number seven. So, here's the question. What is the fewest number of total moves that will allow every person to move to an adjacent square?Azat jan, i didn't understand this one.what is it asking for? Azat
The distance between point A and point B is 245 miles. A men gets in his car in Point A and drives to point B without stoping. For the first one-third of the time his average speed in miles per hour was 45 times the number of hours for that part of the trip. After that, he drives the rest of the way at 56 miles per hour. If he left Point A at 3:00, what time did he arrive at Point B?

Azat
Harut jan, one more fun one for you. Buying House Number Letters A man is waiting in line at a hardware store to buy letters that make up the number of his house. You know. For example -- T, H, R, E, E. But, by luck, there were three other guys ahead of him in line all doing the same thing. The first customer buys the number one. O, N, E. He pays two bucks. The next guy buys the number TWO, and pays three bucks. The third guy buys the number ELEVEN, and he pays five bucks. He is buying the number twelve. How much does he pay? How much does he pay?EVRIKA, EVRIKA, EVRIKA!!!!!! he will have to pay $6. here is the solution, so you won't say i guessed. O,N,E cost $2, T,W,O cost $3. that means that T and W cost $1 more that N and E.E,L,E,V,E,N cost $5.the difference between T,W,E,L,V,E and E,L,E,V,E,N is that former has T and W instead of N and E, which cost $1 more.therefore T,W,E,L,V,E will cost $1 more than E,L,E,V,E,N, $6. good one, but even without the solution if one has to guess he would guess $6.
