Congressional Committee Hearing

10/8/2001

- Caspian Oil Lobby Appears Set to Use October 10th Hearing

================================================================

Situation:

================================================================

On Wednesday, October 10th, the U.S. House International Relations

Committee will hold a hearing on U.S. interests and policies in the

Caucasus and Caspian regions.

Unfriendly members of this panel, including Rep. Dan Burton, are

expected to attempt to use this hearing as a platform to advocate

the repeal of Section 907 and to promote other anti-Armenian

issues. In addition, at least one of the witnesses, Brenda

Shaffer, is on record as a vocal opponent of this provision of U.S.

law.

First enacted in 1992 as part of the Freedom Support Act, Section

907 restricts certain types of direct U.S. aid to the government of

Azerbaijan until it has lifted its blockades and ceased the

offensive use of force against Armenia and Nagorno Karabagh.

================================================================

Action:

================================================================

1) Contact the members of the House International Relations

Subcommittee on Europe and urge them to speak out forcefully during

this hearing in support of 1) Section 907, 2) self-determination

for Nagorno Karabagh, 3) stronger U.S.-Armenia relations, and; 4)

Turkish acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide.

Please stress that you will be watching the webcast of the hearing

live on the International Committee's website: http://www.house.gov/international_relatio...ns/schedule.htm

** Click on the "(live video coverage)" link following the

Subcommittee on Europe section.

million for Armenia.]

Hello, my name is _________________.

(Give your address if you are a constituent)

I am calling to ask the Representative to speak out forcefully in

support of Armenia and Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act

during the October 10th hearing of the Europe Subcommittee of the

House International Relations Committee.

Specifically, I want to encourage you to:

* Oppose any effort to weaken or repeal Section 907

* Support self-determination for Nagorno Karabagh

* Promote stronger U.S.-Armenia relations

* Call for Turkish acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide.

Along with Armenian Americans in your district and around the

nation, I will be watching the webcast of this hearing on the

website of the International Relations Committee.

Thank you.
