CUSTOMS OFFICERS PREVENT SMUGGLING ATTEMPTS

The Armenian customs departments said it had prevented smuggling of diamonds and hard currency into the country. A passenger of Beirut-Yerevan flight Melkon Khayan was trying to smuggle in diamonds worth 6.5 million Armenian Drams and another passenger of Yerevan-Istanbul flight Arthur Simonian did not declare $3,500 out of a total $13,500.

 

 

Other cases of goods smuggling were reported in the border market of Bagratashen. Customs officers prevented smuggling of huge batches of Italian socks, worth nearly $3,000, tires worth more than $3,000 and 50 leather coats. A press release by the customs department says that the presented cases are the direct result of an uncontrolled atmosphere in the market, which proves the necessity of a set of austerity measures by the government to regulate flow of goods in it. However, the press release says nothing about when the smuggling attempts were made and whether they are the result of the uncontrollable market or the “implemented measures.”
