Ethical Question

I have jury duty coming up and based in part on the discussion in Boghos' new thread, "What do you think?", I ask the following...

If you were on a jury and the defendant were Armenian could you be impartial?

For those of us without Armenian surnames, would you bring up your pro-Armenian views to the judge and lawyers?

Speaking of jury duty, I also have one coming on 11/06.

I wouldn't care less if I would come across an Armenians. In fact, if he/she was guilty of the crime, I would punish him more severely, for the sake of future prevention.

Dear Pilafhead,

This is a very good question. I’m sure 99% of the Armenians (me included) would answer the same way as MJ did. But why is that? Why we are so severe towards our own?

I think there are two factors that heavily contribute to that attitude. First, most Armenians suffer from the disease called perfectionism. Often we can’t except the fact that there are different Armenians. Thus we want to project our perfectionism to others. Second, it is due to our sense of community. When we see an Armenian doing something wrong we perceive that as a personal offense and we are inclined to punish him bitterly simply because he is an Armenian. This pretty much reminds me the Catholic doctrine from the Middle ages of purification and redemption of sins through selfpunishment.

I will be more than happy to see what do you think guys!

Well, gamavor, don't be surprised if I say I fully agree with you. I just gave a very emotional answer to Mike. But if I would really have the situation face to face, I would not behave any different than if the criminal was of any other nation - including Turkish.

The standard answer would be that it makes no difference. In practice I believe that even the most ethical Armenian would pass a more severe judgement on another Armenian. Gamavor (zinvor ?) analysis is nevertheless spot on.

I guess I'm the oddball. I'm not sure I could be objective and I would have some level of pro-Armenian bias. I still live in this fantasy world where I feel a connection with every Armenian I come across in daily life. It's probably because I am an outsider looking in.

Now if the victim of the crime were an Armenian, I would be more harsh on the Armenian defendant. I have zero tolerance for Armenian-on-Armenian crime. In my mind the Armenian defendant might as well be wearing a fez. BTW, anybody-on-anybody crime isn't acceptable either.

Gamavor, I hope you're not a prosecutor or defense counsel!

Looking at all your replies, makes me think how hard this really must be. It's like Boghos said, he gave "the standard answer" but in practice would we give that? I can't say what I would do, I hope I'm never faced with that situation!

Doesn't matter if he/she is guilty. If she is done something to my nation, then it is a different question. But if not, then i'll do everything to free him/her. The more we help each other, more unified we become, and more powerful. An Armenian should be a brother to another Armenian.

Artur , you know you are wrong. It is unethical , it is un-relegious.

We should be double strict with our compatriots, so that our nation stays as 'right'as possible.

We are no better than any nation but we should try to be better persons, better Armenians.

The shame of any Armenian should never fall on the heads of other Armenians.

Why parents are usually more strict with their own kids? I think you know the answer.

Allow me to say that the rest is childish , arrogant talk!
