ARF Warns About Karabagh Security

YEREVAN (Armenpress and other sources)--The Chairman of Parliament

Committee on Defense, Interior and National Security Issues and member

of the Bureau of ARF/Dashnaktsutyun Vahan Hovanisian warned that the

waiver of Section 907 by the US Congress may inadvertently support

possible Azeri aggression against Armenia and Karabagh, especially if

the proposed waiver legislation does not include the proper wording.

Hovanisian said this was the viewpoint not only of the ARF, but also of

the Armenian People and the Government. "We were less vocal until now

because we did not want to interfere in the affairs of our American

friends," Hovanisian said.

Hovanisian said that the Congress' bill to waive Section 907 contains

the provision that US military aid to Azerbaijan could not be used

against Armenia, but "we do not see any wording concerning a similar

provision regarding Karabagh." "Without the explicit mention of

Karabagh's security, the provision on Armenia becomes irrelevant because

Azerbaijan's resumption of hostilities in Karabagh would automatically

mean its resumption of hostilities against Armenia,"

he said.

Hovanisian said that the Armenian community in the United States and the

Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) are working hard to

propagate and to explain the position of Armenians, but nevertheless

"some circles are giving in to the pressures and would rather silence

Armenia". "That", he added, "is the wrong path."
