Azat Posted May 17, 2001 Report Share Posted May 17, 2001 YEREVAN, Armenia About 10,000 people apparently nostalgic for the Soviet Union rallied in Armenia's capital Wednesday for their nation to join the loose union between fellow ex-Soviet states Russia and Belarus..The Communist-organized rally came the week before President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus are to visit Armenia..Armenian Communists have long demanded that their country join the Russia-Belarus alliance, which some view as a resurrection of the Soviet Union but which remains largely symbolic.
